The old footbridge at Larry's River
(postcard courtesy of Peggy O'Neal-Thurston)
There is quite a history of that bridge. Originally it consisted of two steel towers and what the locals called the swinging bridge that crossed the river. Apparently it was necessary to build it high because in those days sailing ships would have to go up river. It's hard to imagine today that big ships went that far up river because it is rather shallow today.
The picture could have been taken anytime from the early 20s when it was built to the mid 40s when the swinging bridge itself was taken down. A footbridge across the river about 3 feet wide was built and it is still there today. In the mid 60s, the towers were taken down because they posed a bit of a danger to the residents. They served no useful purpose so the powers that be deemed that they should be taken down.
