Walter Fougere
The community
of Larry's River was deeply saddened on December 22nd when one of its
most respected and well known members Walter FOUGERE passed away at
the age of 72. He was the son of the late Capt. and Mrs. Isaiah FOUGERE
and had been a resident here all his life. His passing was a shock to
his family as he had been in good health all along and had never complained
of being ill at any time. He suffered a stroke which lasted two days.
Death came to him peacefully, surrounded at his bedside by his wife
and family, after having been fortified by the last rites of Holy Mother
the Church, of which he was a devout and faithful member. As a young
man, he made many trips to sea with his father who captained his own
sailing vessel, carrying cargoes to and from Halifax and the Magdalen
Islands. He had a hankering for the lore of the sea and the sailing
vessel and could recall and tell many a sea saga. He was later engaged
in lobster fishing in Larry's River. Surviving besides his widow, Rose,
are one son, Thomas at home, three daughters, Gladys (Mrs. Wilbert HAYMAN),
New Glasgow; Sadie (Mrs. Elmer PITTS), Tracadie; Margaret (Mrs. Bill
LOGAN), Halifax; one sister Mrs. Sadie HILTZ of Conn., U.S.A. Also surviving
are ten drandchildren [sic] and one nephew Frank HILTZ of the U.S.A.F.
Delaware. The high regard in which he was held was evidenced by all
those who came from far and near to pay their last respects, also by
the numerous Mass cards, cards of sympathy, letters, telegrams and floral
tributes received. To his sorrowing wife and family goes the sympathy
of their many friends. The largely attended funeral was held from his
late residence on December 24th, in time for Requiem High Mass at nine
o'clock at St. Peter's Church. Rev. N. MacKinnon officiated at Mass
and at the graveside. The pall bearers were: Ernest PELLERIN, Percy
PELLERIN, Howard PELLERIN, Leo FOUGERE, Thomas and George PELLERIN.
