MacKINNON, Sister Clare "Sister St. Ian Marie"
MacKINNON, Sister Clare "Sister St. Ian Marie" - Sydney, died Monday, February 16, 2004, in Congregation of Notre Dame Health Centre, Sydney. She was in her 60th year as a sister of the congregation. Sister Clare was a native of Iona. She attended Constantine School, Sydney and Iona and Mabou High Schools. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1942 and made her religious profession in August 1944. She taught school at Notre Dame, Charlottetown, St. John's, New Glasgow, Morrison School, Antigonish, Larry's River, Guysborough County (where she established the Congregation's first convent in the area), St. Michael's, River Ryan and Sacred Heart School, Sydney, where she served as full-time teacher and principal for 22 years. Subsequently, she served as the superior of St. Joseph Renewal Centre, Mabou where she was a strong supporter of the centre and the Mabou community. At the time of her death, she was the community leader at Holy Angels Convent, Sydney. Sister Clare was known for her devotion to St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, and in recent years, she established the Marguerite Bourgeoys Centre on York Street in Sydney. She also served on the committee of sisters, who, in conjunction with the administrators of Fortress Louisbourg, established the historic site, 'The Sisters of Louisbourg' at the fortress. To the end, she had a keen interest in education, and was a valued member of the Holy Angels High School Advisory Council since its inception four years ago. She was a kind, understanding and progressive educator and a lover of languages, especially her native Gaelic. Her large extended family appreciated her affection for them and her love for Iona. Sister was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University and received a graduate certificate in adminstration from the University College of Cape Breton. She also earned an M.A. in French from St. Michael's University, Vermont. Besides her religious sisters and a wide circle of friends and colleagues, she leaves to mourn brothers, Ronald (the late Betty) and Duncan (Fran), London, Ont.; sisters, Annie MacKinnon, MacGillivray Guest Home and Effie (John) MacPherson, both of Sydney; Bernadette (John) Smoliak, Edmonton, Alta. She is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews who loved her and whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her parents, John Neil MacKinnon and Mary Catherine MacNeil (Iona, Cape Breton); brothers, Joe (Alice) (Sydney); Malcolm (Winnie) (Ottawa); Charles (Rose) (Ottawa); Roderick (Iona); sisters, Sadie (Bernie) MacKay (Glace Bay); Mary (David) MacDonald and Rita (Protase) Petrie (Dominion). Visitation will be in Holy Angels Convent, 170 George St., Sydney today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. where a Bible Vigil will be held in the convent chapel at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will take place in Sacred Heart Church, George Street, Friday, February 20, at 11 a.m., Father Anthony O'Connor and Father A.J. MacLeod officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. twcurryparkviewchapel.ns.sympatico.ca
