REVEREND GERALD L. DAVID

DAVID, Rev. Gerald L. - 66, Halifax, passed away suddenly December 17, 1996, in St. Mary's Bisilica rectory. Born in Port Felix, Guysborough Co., he was a son of the late Walter and Lucy (Fougere) David. He received his post-secondary education at Saint Mary's University and Holy Heart Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on April 13, 1958, by Archbishop J.G. Berry. For 38 years, he served the people of the Archdiocese of Halifax faithfully as an assistant priest, pastor and chaplain. Between 1958 and 1966, he was assistant priest at St. Charles Church, Amherst, St. Joseph's Church, Halifax, and St. Peter's Church, Dartmouth. He then went on to serve as pastor at Star of the Sea Parish, Terence Bay, from 1967-1972; St. Peter's, Sheet Harbour, from 1972-1975 and St. Charles, Amherst, from 1975-1980. Between 1980 and 1987, he served as assistant priest at St. Catherine's and at St. Agnes, Halifax. In 1988, he was appointed chaplain to St. Vincent's Guest House. He retired due to ill health in 1995, but continued to carry out a variety of priestly responsibilities at St. Mary's Basilica. Aside from his many years of dedicated service to the church throughout the Archdiocese of Halifax, Father Gerald is remembered for his generosity and for his love of sports and music. He is survived by sisters, Irene Pelrine, Halifax; Dorothy Benoit, Pomquet; Edna David, Halifax; Anita Amirault, Manchester, N.H.; brother, Thomas, Port Felix. He was predeceased by brothers, Alphonse, Elzear. The body will be at St. Mary's Basilica from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, and from 2-4 p.m. Friday. The Office of the Dead will be celebrated at 8 p.m. Friday night. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary's Basilica at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 21, Archbishop Austin E. Burke presiding. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hope Cottage, 2435 Brunswick St., Halifax.

He was ordained to the priesthood on April 13, 1958 by Archbishop J. G. Berry. For thirty-eight years he served the people of the Archdiocese of Halifax faithfully as an assistant priest, pastor, and chaplain.
Between 1958 and 1966 he was assistant priest at. St. Charles Parish, Amherst; St. Joseph's Parish, Halifax; and St. Peter's Parish, Dartmouth. Fr. David then went to serve as pastor at Star of the Sea Parish, Terence Bay from 1967 to 1972; St. Peter's Parish, Sheet Harbour from 1972 to 1975; and St. Charles Parish, Amherst from 1975 to 1980. Evening Prayer was celebrated on Friday evening and the Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, December 21, 1996 at St. Mary's Basilica. Archbishop Austin Burke presided.
Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
