AVERY, Abraham Joseph "Abe" - 85, Windsor, passed away Friday, August 9, 2002, in Hants Community Hospital. Born in Larry's River, he was a son of the late Joseph "Jeffrey" Sigefroi and Euphermia "Mamie" (Gerrior) Avery. Abe worked for several years for Nova Scotia Light and Power, Halifax, as well as for DND in Ottawa. A veteran of the Second World War, he went overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in 1944. He was traded to the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, 9th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He landed in Normandy one month after D-Day and was wounded in action on October 26, 1944 in the Breskins Pocket, during the liberation of Holland. After a lengthy hospital stay, he was repatriated to Canada. Abe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church and a member of Hants County Branch 9, Royal Canadian Legion. He was also a lifelong musician. He is survived by his wife, the former Audrey Patricia Horne; son, Garnet (Ploy) Avery, British Columbia; granddaughter, Pimchawee (Yui) Suwanakart, Bangkok, Thailand; daughter, Sharon Boegel, Windsor; grandsons, Steven (Nadine), Constance Bay, Ont.; Gary (Carrie), Nepean, Ont.; brother, Victor (Lucina) Avery, Bedford; sister, Mamie (Pete) Marcott, Port Hood. He was predeceased by daughter, Janet Louise; granddaughter, Tracey Lyn Boegel; brothers, Emmett (Dot), and Howard (Thelma); sisters, Elizabeth Schroder, Mildred Cayer. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. today in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Windsor. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.
