1: Nice day. Mrs. F[eltmate] got over (first trip since Xmas).
Arthur [Rhynold] here tonight & we ate peanuts, Jamie &
he & I. Ainsley P. got his head hurt on Three Top [Island. probably
Ainsley Pyche]
Jan 2: Stormy. Feel so well don't mind resting. Not very cold either.
Jan 3: Telling Mum about San[itorium].
Jan 4: Lovely day. Was out this a.m. to Dave's and both shops. Saw Cal's
dog harnessed.
Jan 5: Myrtle Power died. Left a boy, a girl and new baby girl.
Jan 11: Dad's birthday. He went to Halifax to speak on radio.
Jan 13: Pa spoke over radio.
Jan 14: Fanny Al, Violetta, and Mrs.Norm here tonight. Beautiful moonlight
just like day.
[Fanny (Feltmate) Munroe married to Almon "Al" Munroe, and
her sister Violetta (Feltmate) married to John Henry Williams. Mrs Norm
is probably Mary Rhynold wife of Norm Rhynold-pf]
Jan 15: Pa came from Halifax.
Jan 17: Jamie on lake for first this year [cutting ice]
Jan 18: Made poetry on Kentville while I rested this evening.
Jan 23: Lola died ten o'clock p.m.
Jan 25: Lola buried. Mum to Lizzie's tonight. Brought book called Shirley
Temple in Heidi. Meeting in P.F. today [Port Felix]
Feb 1: Mama fell down. Hurt her knee and arm some. I got a book from Nickerson.
Pa heard from Tom & Ada [Duncan, who were now living in Amherst.
They letter they wrote spoke about how little a bucket or rope cost in
Amherst as compared to down in Whitehead where the prices were controlled
by the fish merchants. The letter is still in our family archives.]
Feb 2: I wrote more poetry - one called Fisherman's Home Sweet Home.
Feb 3: Heard Pat Munroe is very sick. Eaton's catalog out. Connie here
before supper playing our records and here sewing this evening.
Feb 4: Simpsons catalog.
Feb 5: found a chord on Sappho [see Feb 7 below-pf]
Feb 6: George [Grover] here this afternoon wearing a tailored
coat, wine plaid scarf and new cap. [I wonder if this was a sign of
the fisherman having a bit more disposable money in their pockets because
of the success of the fishermen's co-operative? -pf]
Feb 7: We played on Sapho mandolin. Doug brought 3 records, took 8
of ours.
Feb 8: Played some of Clarel's records.
Feb 9: Hauling ice for Co-op. [The Whitehead Co-operative now had their
own ice house, built down in front of Cann Feltmate's home].
Feb 11: Katie in today wearing knickers.
Feb 14: Melvin Digdon here to dinner. I was up around after 3 o'clock
a.m.. Lamp light for 'company'.
Feb 15: Enos came and took Clarel's records. Mama & I sat by room
stove awhile.
Feb 17: Fixed up my room a little. We had some duck for dinner.
Feb 18: Katie over today and we broke a wish bone.
Feb 19: Just Sidney [Grover] & Bernie [Munroe] here
tonight. Sidney played fiddle. I played some. Evelyn's second boy born
today at 8 a.m. Mary Rhynold came from hospital. [This might well be
Evelyn Munroe wife of Ivory. Evelyn's parents were Bert and Lola Belle
(Feltmate) Munroe]
Feb 20: Everett and Billy Si here [both Feltmates. "Billy Si"
was son of Cyrus and Everett was son of Angus]
Feb 21: Jamie played. Pa played some.
Feb 22: Merle [Munroe] is not working this week. Jamie is in shop.

Feb 23: Played Sappho. Found a couple new "hints". Aid to Lydia's
Feb 27: Fred Cerett off Nova II here this evening. Also Dave, Sam,Sidney,
& Rich Uloth.
Feb 28: Didn't go down to dinner as going up & down maybe making me
lose. Merle came back to clerk this p.m. Dance in Hall.
Mar 1: Nova II and ice breaker went out. Lots of gunning today.
Mar 2: Aunt Deen [Zenia (Grover) Duncan] is sick. I didn't go downstairs
at all today but quite contented up here. Feeling well.
Mar 3: Pa to Canso . Brought grapes. Merle upstairs telling me about the
dance.
Mar 5: Dr. up to Aunt Deen. Ethel staying there tonight. Also Ina.
Mar 7: Jim Duncan very sick.
Mar 8: Joe Feltmate here tonight.
Mar 12: Jamie played some old foxtrots on gramephone.
Mar 14: Just thought this evening.
Mar 17: Grandmother scalded her foot some.

Mar 28: No one here tonight only Lydia. I was down to supper and wrote
a song. Harry Feltmate, Billy Si and Carl here this evening. Ice breaker

Mar 29: Fan [(Jamieson) Grover] papered for Gran. Ice breaker worked
again today up the river.
Mar 30: Fine. Pa was breaking up the porch for a verandah.
Mar 31: Heard Wilfred Pyche was going to be married.
April 2: Lydia Rhynold and baby here.
April 4: Jamie has a cold. Gran's foot awful sore.
April 5: Aunt Fan cleaned over head in kitchen.
April 7: cold in my head.
April 11: Grandmother had terrible pain with sore foot. Dr Sodero here.
Blowing now and cold. First of lobster fishing.
April 12: Fan cleaned for Fos. [Fostina Feltmate wife of Cann]. Had
supper here. Falcon [Duncan] here. He and Jamie took some candy
to school.
April 15: Shim here to supper.
April 16: Jamie Phalen here tonight. Lillian Phalen & Florence here.
April 17: Dr Sodero to Ada. His brother came with him.
April 19: Trial on Otto's bounty. I talked a lot to Merle [Munroe]
today downstairs. Arthur & Edward and the rest here talking trial.
[this was Otto A. Munroe married first to Janie Feltmate and second
to Effie Peart]
April 20: Ada has a baby girl born at Antigonish. [This was Ada
and Vern Munroe's daughter Phyllis Lorraine who later married John Wallace
Beare-pf] Cut my blue dress off for a skirt. Trial finished. George
here p.m. Debar telephoned from here. Bill Spears and an agent for dinner
and Jim Grover to supper. Remy here today.
April 24: I was out doors a lot. So fine. Jamie took me out in little
punt to the boat.
April 27: Saw the P.F. [Port Felix] bus over (with Cassie King).
April 30: Pie aid at Angus Feltmate's
May 1: Church tonight. Mr Hatton's first sermon. Connie here p.m. telling
me all about the pie aid. Nova II was in and also Capt. Lowe's boat. He
was here.
May 4: Lydi ran upstairs all fixed up with coloring. [make up?-pf]
May 5: Joe Fitz's birthday, isn't it. 21 eh?
May 6: Isabelle's baby born yesterday.
May 7: Kenny Brine's first trip. Saw Ed F. taking orders for shoes.
May 8: Jamie & I gave Mama hand lotion & a cake for mother's day.
May 9: [Marion's birthday] Jamie gave me 1/2 doz oranges and Mama
gave fruit & candy. Lydia's treat was a bar & pop. My own suggestion.
Pa payed me my 24 cents for lobsters. George was down today and had a
piece of my cake and some others had some too.
May 10: Ina's [Grover] birthday. Uncle Charlie [Duncan] got
over today with help but no wheel chair. The big white pop truck from
N. G. was here.
May 11: Mama got Mothers Day card & hankies (Lindsay) and I got a
birthday card & hankie. A bit late but just as dear. [Lindsay was
Marion's brother in the States]
May 13: aunt Dean fixed Gran's clothes I guess. Took her a long time.
May 14: Dance in hall. Earl Jamieson there.
May 23: Flag donated to school. Priest & clergy there. Mrs Cashins
& Mrs Marr here. Aunt Fan cleaned dining room & hall upstairs.
May 24: Mr Hatton & children Russel & Emma and the maid Laura
were here. Communion. Ivy & Bernice Snow selling seeds.
May 27: got the parcel on Capt. Lowe's boat.
May 28: Dance in Hall for Bob Ehler. Went to shop this a.m. Ainsley M[unroe]
there, June, also Fred Gandy. George there a minute. Lay down from 12
to 3 and went to shop and sat out behind the house talking to Ainsley
Pyche.
June 5: Sat in the hall and in Jamie's room while he tied ties. Church
tonight. Mum didn't go. Pa brought the little turtle over from Jack's.
Motorcycle went by.
Jun 6: Thunder storm for the first this spring. Mail came this a.m. and
tonight. From now on, it will come in the night.
Jun 7: aunt Fan washed for Gran, papered hall. Harry Jones is here.
Jun 8: We put new oilcloth in hall
Jun 9: Turtle got lost twice.
Jun 10: Blowed today but lovely evening. Lovely big moon.
Jun 11: Isabelle went to hospital.
Jun 13: Falcon fixed room door. Jamie talking about going to States with
Captain Lowe.
Jun 14: Jamie's birthday. Gave him a record. I bought 2

there. Everett [Feltmate] and a gang came in.
Jun 17: Raining a.m. foggy p.m. Pa upset the scrubbing bucket in the hall.
got box of lilacs from Mrs Nora Ehler in mail.
Jun 18: Mum brought the little chickens upstairs in a basket
Jun 19: Mr McPhail's farewell sermon. Pa went.
Jun 21: Big Day. Whoopee! Movies made right here. Mr Johnny something
camera man. Fred Bradshaw sound man, Willie assistant. George Black
boss. 3 scenes taken. [Through Father Jimmy Tompkin's connections,
March of Time came up from New York to film a newsreel on the Co-operative
Movement, that would be shown in movie theatres across North America.
The onset of World War Two, however, pre-empted the Co-op newsreel, and
apparently it was never shown. I have not been able to track down the
the March of Time archives to see if the footage still exists, but I was
not an experienced researcher at the time I tried, back in the 1970s.-pf]
Jun 22: Dellis Creamer Andrews [in margin it says "Mrs Arnold"-pf]
and her friend Kay (Mrs Roy Durant) were on the veranda. Talking to
Kay Durant a long time. A yacht in a.m. Played organ a bit with Jamie.

Jun 26: Chester [Duncan] brought lovely lilacs. Had strawberries
& cream from Dean [Zenia Duncan]
Jun 28: Pa to Drumhead.
July 5: Alice & Aunt Ethel got permanents. Mama finished putting up
paper in hall.
July 6: Picnic up the river. Boat race. Herman 1st. Albert 2nd. Jamie
3rd. [These were likely Herman Rhynold, Albert Uloth and Jamie Feltmate]
July 7: A girl selling soap (Norma Allen) Guysboro.
July 9: Show tonight. Bob Ehler sold tickets on accordion today.
July 12: Pa went to Halifax this morning by Queensport way.
July 13: Mr and Mrs Cran & Hope & 2 kiddies up. [Cranswick
H Feltmate and family, the barber from Canso. Hope was married to Raymond

Jul 20: Lindsay and Anna arrived this evening. Bill Phalen to the
house this evening.
Jul 25: WE got up about 2 a.m. saw Lindsay & Anne off.
Aug 4: Joe Munroe was down in horse & wagon.
Aug 5: Walked down to wharf to see the Coniseus.
Aug 6: Show tonight. Mum & pa went.
Aug 8: Mum, Pa, Jamie helped Sidney [Grover] with the hay.

Aug 12: Went downstairs once today to hear car radio (Pearl Soap agent).
Nothing going on. Coniseus was in that's all.
Aug 15: Tourists here. June, I, Agatha, Mum, Lydia, Fan, Marion, Sidney,
Dave, Ainsley, Jim Grover out watching them. Pa & Huntly spoke. [Huntley

Aug 16: Jamie went to Antigonish. Mum to [post] office. Got
good report from x-ray. Dorothy and baby came home. Mr Hatton brought
them over.
Aug 17: Mum to Ida's. Knitting teacher there.
Aug 23: Hattie Hensbee 2 men and woman singing to Dave's. I ran up.

drink powders. There's a tug and dredge in painted red.

Sep 8: Jim & Earl broke down and Vern had to go outside after them

up the river, born last night.

Sep 30: patched Jamie's sox. Ainsley brought Roy's wife up from Three
Top to go home with Earn.
Oct 1: Went up where pa is building his hen house. Fixed one stocking
today. Connie here p.m. She is 16 today. I fixed the other stocking tonight.
Oct 3: Jamie started to dig well. Mr. McDuff died last night. [Levi
McDuff b 1857, husband of Harriet (Jones)- pf]
Oct 4: Mr. McDuff's funeral
Oct 6: We killed a hen and rooster for dinner. AYPA at Connie's [Anglican
Young Peoples Assoc]
Oct 7 : Miss Craton & inspector Caldwell here. Miss Craton getting
old songs. [This was Helen Creighton who did a great deal of work gathering
early stories and songs from around Nova Scotia. She published a number
of books -pf]
Oct 15: A kangaroo show in Port Felix. Pa went to Halifax.
Oct 16: Pa spoke on radio again.
Oct 18: Pa came from Halifax. He saw Dr. Found in Kentville.
Oct 20: Mama to Conrad's quilting.
Oct 26: the Bluenose won the race. 6 minutes ahead.
Oct 27: Norman, Fred & Earl getting ground from our well in Earl's
truck.
Oct 28: Still working at the ground.
Nov 3: Sam [Duncan] brought pork.
Nov 6: Mrs F[eltmate] and I went to Aunt Deen's. Mama came. Wilfred
Ehler & Margaret & baby there.
Nov 8: Pa got his shoulder hurt in well.
Nov 10: Earl selling mackeral. They said Cal Bennet was up. don't know
why I didn't go down to dinner. Just got interested in some problems.
Nov 11: Poppy day. We did problems all evening & I asked them from
a magazine.
Nov 12: Fresh mackeral dinner. Came to bed before 8 o'clock. Played Jerome's
Farewell with parlor lamp lit.
Nov 14: Fred Rhynold & Ainsley working at well. Fred to supper.
Inspector to school and parked out here. Pat Conway's boy up in Co-op
truck.
Nov 15: Mama to Ida's on errand for eggs. Vestry meeting.
Nov 16: Guild here. Mr McGray played fiddle. Mr Hatton wasn't over because
little boy got hurt yesterday. Maizie brought over her new hat & shoes.
Nov 17: social evening for AYPA.
Nov 18: Wilfred Conways has twins. [sic]. Jim Myres [sic] here.
Nice warm day. Out by well a couple times.
Nov 19: Brody meeting at school. Connie here p.m. played lots of records.
Nov 20: Electric storm last night. No church. Pa mum & I looked at
catalogs a few minutes. Jamie & we sang.
Nov 21: Pattern book from Essie. Jamie got cod oil capsules from Victor
so I took some today.
Nov 22: Mama & Lydia cleaning shop.
Nov 23: Maizie went up home so Mama milked cow. Zern [Rhynold/Reynolds]
was over about 4:30 a.m. for fish. Gandy over tonight. Havelock Williams
to the door. Freezer meeting in hall.
Nov 28: Earl selling mackeral 2 for 25 cents.
Nov 29: Horace Pyche went to hospital.
Dec 2: Snow ! George here just as I was getting a cup of tea. I played
a tune on fiddle. He chorded. Maizie here. He rolled her in the snow.
Dec 3: Sat. Fine. The boats went up to Governement Wharf. AYPA meeting.
Dec 6: Queensport crowd came to have play but it rained.
Dec 7: Gwen, leona G and Johanna D here p.m. 2 men selling Italian goods.
Started cementing well curb. Pa & Jamie went to the play. The other
4 characters Earl J. Mr Hatton Myrtle Spanks Miss Nichols.
Dec 9: Decided on Mum's present
Dec 10: Maizie brought the mail. Was she wet!
Dec 11: Roast for dinner. Harry and Carl Ward came on truck.
Dec 12: Barney Cashin selling beef. Nova was in to Can's wharf. They got
the freight by water. Carl Ward and Harry here. [probably Harry Feltmate].

Dec 14: Jamie to Canso. Brought trimmings. Dave, Ainsley & Earl to
Canso too. Brought radio. Meeting for poor tonight at Hall. Teacher here
a minute with Maizie. First time I met her.
Dec 15: Pa & Dave to Antigonish. Got back about 7:30. Ganif ran into
Alden's boat. Guild & AYPA.
Dec 17: Jamie helped Ethel [Grover] decorate.
Dec 19: Addressed cards.
Dec 20: Had dinner in bed. Mr Harris funeral. Storming. Hause Pyche
came from hospital. Stayed all night. Uncle Alex here. [ "Hause
Pyche" was Horace Pyche. "Uncle Alex" was Alexander Jamieson
married to Cynthia (Feltmate)-pf]
Dec 21 - 23 : [no entries]
Dec 24: Feeling better tied up gifts. Trimmed tree tonight. Connie
[Grover] and Jamie delivered gifts. Church at 11:15 p.m.
Dec 25: Connie here while we opened gifts. Connie, June & Agatha here
p.m. Connie, Ina, Sidney, Ethel, George, Cal [all Grovers] here
tonite. Got 17 gifts. 31 cards as yet.
Dec 26: Alice [Duncan] here also Chester [Duncan] &
Fluff [his white dog. He had a series of them over the years. -pf]
Dec 27: Connie brought her presents down. Pa got the new little stove.
I sat in room tonite. Heard Murry Jamieson got married.
Dec 28: Lay on davenport. then Jamie & I sang. Mama out seeing Xmas
presents. I made toast. 10 o'clock going to bed now. mama is home. Jamie
is learning his lessons. [he was taking correspondence courses - pf]
Dec 29: Went down about 4. George F. here. Had supper. Played records
and everything. Maizie here too. Guild to Mrs. Norm's. AYPA.
Dec 30: Pa, Dunc McD[onald] to Antigonish. Ward to hospital.
Dec 31: Connie here p.m. made a fire. went in room played records. I went
to Dave's [Duncan. Dave & Lydia Duncan lived next door-pf].
Pa there too. Came home 10. Then Dave came for Mama to hear Uncle Ezra.
