Jan 3: Falcon [Duncan] here p.m. also Murdock [Munroe].
Connie here tonight. Quiet.
Jan 4: Working on dividends the last few days in the [Fisherman's Co-operative]
store. Norman & the new cook Whalen brought the mail. snowing. blowing
Jan 5: Bob Duncan here awhile.
Jan 7: To office p.m. Came down on Joe M. sleigh [Munroe?-pf]. Home
all evening. No one here. New sailor & wife arrived.
Jan 9: Connie & I started for lake but met Verna.
Jan 11: Good skating.
Jan 13: Sat up late knitting and listening to Big Sister which came on
about 10:30. Murdock here tonight. He says Frank & Scotty are to his
place.
Jan 14: Clarence Richardson here to supper. Looks good. Went to Guild
at Ida's. Sailor's wife boarding there. Mr & Mrs Shadbolt.
Jan 17: Nice day. Fred Harris' sleighs going by all day. Angelo and boys
up on lake. Connie & Agatha up there taking pictures.
Jan 21: Margaret (Haines) and another girl here telephoning tonight.
Jan 22: I asked Angelo his brothers names. He said Antony, Armand, Albert,
Lewis, Roland, Joseph, Gino, Denny, Luke. His sister is Yoland.
Jan 24: Irene Snow & Adeline George to church.
Jan 25: Today is supposed to be the funeral of Albert Williams. Fine morning.
Some hail p.m. Hail & thunder this evening. The sailors are mostly

Jan 29: Dance for Russian Fund. Made $33. Dora & girls leaders.
Connie & I went to the dance with Dave Rutledge and Mr Rutledge in
car. Danced with Angelo, Ainsley M. and Edward R. Came home before the
fight.
Feb 2: Angelo ran in to say so long before supper.
Feb 3: Angelo & Norman went to Montreal.
Feb 4: Went to Queensport.
Feb 5: Stayed in Queensport.
Feb 6: Went to New Glasgow. 1.75 on bus, 1.70 on train.
Feb 7: Abe's funeral. They sang Blest be the Tie. Lexie [Bigney] &
I to John Grover's tonight. [Abe was Abraham N. Uloth, son of James
Uloth and Mahala (Duncan)-pf]
Feb 8: Buddy went to bus with me. I went to Trenton.
Feb 9: Annie [Duncan] & I to Show in N.G. went on Jitney.
Feb 10: Annie & I to surprise party. Quiet.
Feb 12: Went to Tom Feltmate's. Stayed all night. Rhoda [(Grover) Feltmate]
& I to Charlie's [Feltmate, Tom & Rhoda's son]. Pre fabs.
Feb 15: Left N.G. Alex [Bigney] put me on train. Pat Munroe was
on. 11 in 7 passenger car. Came over with Earn and Roy Hensbee. Got stuck
in a rut by Grey Hill. Walked in a smothering snowstorm to Charlie Abram.
Stayed all night. Clyde Horten there.
Feb 16: To Duncan McDonald's for dinner and 'til about 4 p.m. when Calvin
came for me in sleigh.
Feb 19: Edward here also Bertha Pyche. RCAF snowplough was down.
Feb 20: Carroll went to Pictou to work. They say Angelo came home last
night.
Feb 23: Dr. to Albert Munroe's children evening. 4 in bed. Mostly pneumonia.
Feb 24: Art Baldwin to dinner. His 25 birthday. Edward here short time
tonight. Albert Munroe came home from hospital.
Feb 25: Mama quilting on Guild Quilt p.m. Had supper to Ina's. I got Pa's
supper.
Feb 28: Mama to Albert Munroe's p.m. Mrs Alex sick. Dr Stanton there tonight.
The airforce snow plough down today. Freight boat in.
Mar 1: Mrs Alex died at 2 this morning. Liz & Ada Haines came to Albert's.
["Mrs Alex" was Letitia "Lettie" Ellen (Conrad)
wife of Alexander Munroe (Thomas Alexander) and daughter of Michael and
Mary Ann Conrad. One of her sons was Albert Cyril Munroe who was married
to Leona Sophia (Pyche) and had 11 children, several of whom were just
getting over pneumonia at this time - see Feb 23-pf]
Mar 2: Bert [Munroe] came to Albert's [his brother's]. Bernie [Munroe]
came over to Albert's with me.
Mar 3: Pa to Albert Munroe's tonight. Ed came home in mail. [Ed was
one of Albert's older sons-pf]
Mar 4: funeral p.m. Mama not to church but to the house.
Mar 5: Burt & Murdock here. [uncle and nephew. They were son and
grandson of Mrs Alex Munroe]
Mar 6: Cook brought the mail. Fisherman's meeting.
Mar 7: Wrote to Cook Peerzan.
Mar 10: Clara has another boy. Last night. [Clara (Jones) Rhynold and
her husband Fred had a son Claire Ellsworth -pf]
Mar 13: Up in old kitchen loft. Gave Arthur R[hynold] cod liver
oil. Agatha & I to Connie's where they were quilting. Lizzie [Porter],
Alice [Duncan], Minnie [Munroe], Johanna [Grover],
Mama & Ina [Grover].
Mar 14: Last night
phone rang 1.25 for barracks & us
Mar 15: Harry Duncan, Harold Snyder, Stan George here. Harry staying all
night. Bob Duncan brought the mail to shop. Mrs Turner died this morning.
Connie & Agatha collected for Red Cross at the River.
Mar 16: Robby here tonight for gramophone needles. I called barracks for
first time offering needles.
Mar 17: Lottie Turner's funeral. Ma & Pa up to the house a.m. with
Willie George. Pa to funeral p.m. Not very fine.
Mar 18: Chadbolt bailed out his well. Angelo & a crowd to Canso tonight.
Mar 19: Today I put more cards in the store. New boy to Herman's today
or yesterday. [This may have been Patrick who was born in spring 1943
to Herman and Agnes Rhynold -pf]. Was in and saw Clara's new baby.
Mar 20: Chadbolts is going up to Monestry to meet night train.
Mar 21: Communion a.m. Effie Williams & Frances Rhynold to church.
Mar 23: Picking out beans from split peas, but didn't work long.
Mar 24: Finished beans. Lloyd won $15 for running around the barracks.
He ran about 2 miles in 13 minutes.
Mar 25: Connie learning [morse] code for fun. Allison C[onrad]
to store. Aunt Fan staying here tonight. Uncle George had soup here.
Mar 26: A load of furniture came to barracks today. Some of the boys went
driving tonight.
Mar 30: Airforce truck down tonight.
Mar 31: George F[raser] here short time. He carried mat up far
as school for me to mail to Jamie. I did pillow cases today.
Apr 1: Pa to Canso. I kept shop.
Apr 2: Sleet on everything but melted by noon. The boys to Canso tonight.
Mama to Albert M[unroe]. I was to Lizzie's today. Clarence [Rhynold,
Lizzie's son] is home yet. Had about 14 days I think [he was on
leave -pf]
Apr 4: Joe Munroe here today. I hear Doug F is home but going tomorrow.
Apr 5: Went to [post] office. Saw Marth & Have there. [Havelock
and Martha (Uloth) Munroe]. Also Bob Duncan and Lloyd. Thelma &
I were picked up by Jack Shrider. Carroll [Feltmate] and Bill Whalen
came home tonight.
Apr 8: Angelo helping Carroll with [lobster] pots and here to dinner.
Connie & I called for Mrs Chadbolt and had Guild here. Vivian, Connie,
Agatha & I played games in room.
Apr 9: The post office is at Fred's [Fred & Clara Rhynold's]
tonight for the first. [Fred and Clara kept the post office for many
years. It made the trip for mail much shorter for those who lived "down
in the cove" of Lower Whitehead-pf]
Apr 12: Snow on ground. Mail couldn't come down. Fred went up after
it.
Apr 13: Raining all day. Some ice in harbour.
Apr 15: Jimmy & Angelo to office but Connie and I didn't wait because
we hadn't nerve. Saw Selena Horn at Fred's.
Apr 16: Agatha & I in store. Pa gunning p.m. I hear that Bill
Phalen has mumps and Lloyd Wakelin isn't back because he's in a hospital.
stomach. Shipper went out today.
Apr 18: Church tonight. Lovely sermon.
Apr 22: Wilfred is home on lief. Calvin went away to report. Earl
also went back.
Apr 24: To Blanche's Birthday party. Went up with Dunc [McDonald].
Stayed all night with Clara. Blanch was 15 yesterday.
Apr 29: Norman Wheeler went to hospital.
May 3: Party at Conrad's for Jim.
May 6: Emmet Joyce drafted.
May 7: Saw new sailor at office. Young. Ken.
May 9: [Marion's birthday] Nice day. Went up for milk. Connie
gave me a flower. Lindsay [Marion's brother in Boston] called on
phone.
May 12: Carroll went to Mulgrave for examination. Porrier & Miss Samson
to dinner. Bertha P[yche] here p.n. Harvey & Sloan here tonight.
May 16: To Falcon's p.m. He's in bed for 10 days.
May 17: Connie & I to Nelt's. Heard Lloyd Allen and Lee on radio.
May 19: Selling tickets.
May 20: To Guild at Bernie's. Sold tickets too. Drew tonight. Harvey won
the Guild biscuit cushion.
May 21: Pa & I to show.
May 22: Harvey here teaching me two step.
May 24: Bill Stewart in shop today. He arrived this morning. 5 of the
sailors to the office.
May 26: Bob Duncan got back today.
May 28: Isabel & I to show. George Formby. No good.
May 31: Wesley has a stroke
June 1: Don [Feltmate] was fishing with Carroll.
Jun 2: Carl Fitz[gerald] here phoning for Earn H. I decided to
go with him
Jun 3: Carl Fitz & I went with Earn H to Monistry. They went to Mulgrave
and I went on train to New Glasgow for 1.75 Went to Trenton because baby
had measles at Lexie's. Was to Lydia's tonight. Black out.
Jun 6: Met Mrs Free George & daughter Goldie
Jun 7: Josephine & I to a Jane Withers show. Harold got my suitcase
from station today.
Jun 8: Gertie Weldon & I to Rhoda's [Feltmate]. I'm staying tonight.
Went to dentist at 9 pm. Got home at 11.
Jun 9: Went to Trenton in taxi which Rhoda & Margaret got for me.
Annie [Duncan] & I to a house to see Ruby Cameron who is married
to Clarence Grato. Mrs Cameron there also Viola. rainy. Came home on bus
5 cents.
Jun 12: Went to dentist. Got my teeth. Went to Country with Adrian Johnny.
Jun 13: Adrian & I to church. Donald Stuart Fraser to supper. I got
sick this evening. Too much all bran & cream.
Jun 14: Stayed in bed all day. Johnny nice and thoughtful. Adrian very
good.
Jun 18: Willie U, Harold & I came home. Left at 3 and had a flat tire.
Lunch in Antigonish. Home at 8:30.
Jun 20: Mr Rowe's first sermon. Two boarders at Ina's [Grover].
Jun 21: connie & I to Aunt Ethel's for eggs at 10:30. New building
starting on hill [at the Base -pf]
Jun 22: Dance for River school [upper Whitehead]. Home at 11:30.
Jun 30: Carroll went to P.F. dance [Port Felix]. Mrs Herb
Doiron drowned herself
Jul 2: Neil here p.m. to say goodbye but here this evening. Connie &
Agatha here. We sang.
Jul 3: Neil went this morning at 5:30 or a bit later. I went down and
waved from the kitchen window. He was looking and waved first. Mrs Wesley
is home. [Eliza Maud (George) married to Wesley Munroe. Wesley died
in 1943.-pf]
Jul 5: Mama bought Mrs Thurloe's hat [Minnie (Uloth) married to
Thurloe Munroe]
Jul 6: Went to dance at Hall.
Jul 7: Marie, Angelo, Carroll & I stuck in canal p.m. We 4 and Bernie
and Bertha went to Halfway Cove dance.
Jul 11: Went to see Alice Conrad.
Jul 12: Went to Haulover with Dunc [McDonald] to see Winifred.
Clara took my picture. Had supper with Mrs Wesley, Winslo [her son],
Verna. Came home in mail. Neta F[raser] here short time.
Jul 13: Winifred supposed to go away today if she got a car.
Jul 14: Little navy boat in.
Jul 15: Went to Reserve Dance. Good time. Beginning of a fight but nothing
happened.
Jul 19: Got letter from [Dr. ] McRitchie saying I can do light
work. [at this time Marion still considered herself to be on a "long
rest cure" for TB-pf]
Jul 20: Weeding. Saw Isabel & Ruth Munroe going down road. I'm
to bed early. Ate too much.
Jul 21: connie here also Beatrice, Gloria, Joyce, Bob Duncan & DeEntremont.
Jul 22: Connie & I to Agatha's Connie Oikle and Claire there. Teddy
Arglye is rooming here. [Argyle?-pf]
Jul 23: Don [Feltmate] out fishing with Carroll. Here to dinner. No
one here. I knit.
Jul 24: Genesta & family also Ann Murphy came.
Jul 25: Home all day. Mrs Thurloe [Munroe], Mrs Nelt [Grover],
Mrs Simms here.
Jul 26: Sent for Rose dress. Ed F. here p.m. Going to bed very early.
Mrs Simms was here for early dinner. Austen [Feltmate], Sam &
Carl Fitz went to C.B. [Cape Breton].
Jul 27: Went to the dance. 1 with Ed, 1 with K. Sloan. He went home earlier.
The cook won the quilt. Halifax gang there. Mrs Simms went back home.
Jul 28: Bertha Pyche to dinner & supper.
Jul 30: Ma & Pa to show.
Aug 3: Dance in Queensport tonight.
Aug 4. thunder & rain. Mr Rowe here p.m.
Aug 5: Rainy. Thelma here tonight also Angelo & Norman. Had music
and fun.
Aug 8: Met the cook's wife & baby
Aug 9: Connie & I went with Manzer to the Haulover to surprise Isabel
for her birthday but she was going out. We walked home. I guess it wasn't
her birthday anyway.
Aug 10: cleaned closet & bedroom a.m. Washed dishes. Whitened shoes.
In garden with Mama p.m.
Aug 12: Connie &
I to Purvis' and bought collar $1.25 from Mrs. Porter. Carroll brought
his boat home $700. from Larry's River.
Aug 13: We had farewell party for Connie O[ickle] at Nelt's. Then
all went to office. Bertha Pyche & family here. [Bertha was a daughter
of Horace "Hause" Pyche, and later married Lawrence Munroe -
pf]
Aug 14: Rain. Didn't go to office. Sat upstairs in hall and wrote.
Aug 16: John George died last evening at 8.
Aug 19: Alice Conrad's birthday today.
Aug 20: Fan and Let here to supper. All to Barracks. To Mrs Nelt's getting
bobbins filled. [Mrs Nelt Grover, Johanna (Uloth Roberts)]. Took
some pictures. Marie, Edna, Joan, Mae Anne over. Blondie on steps a few
minutes. Marie and I to Connie's tonight. Mama, aunt Anne, Edna, MAc to
see Joe Feltmate at Angus'. [Joe had died on Aug 16, 1943 in Halifax
-pf]
Aug 21: Angelo in a few minutes today. He helped Falcon [Duncan]
with the hay.
Aug 22: Joe Feltmate buried today. Mama to Cole Harbour with Ethel [Grover],
George [Grover], Jim Myrs. I had supper with Connie.
Aug 25: I think Melba came home last evening. [probably Melba Munroe-pf]
Aug 26: Connie and I to Dance. 1 with George, 1 Gerald, 1 Owen. Saw
Wilfred Delory.
Aug 27: Nurse McKenzie here. Out rowing with Joyce and Thelma.
Aug 30: Melba & I rowing, picking berries and dancing.
Aug 31: picked currents and blue berries. Leta and baby Edwin here. [Leta
(Grover) married to Alva Fraser had a new baby, Edwin -pf] No one
much at office. Got my pictures. Was at Lloyd's and on Nelt's swing. Mrs
Eb's remains came today. [Sarah "Sadie" (McKay) wife of Ebenezer
(called Eben or Eb) Munroe. Sadie was daughter of Thomas and Eunice McKay
and was Eb's second wife. -pf]
Sep 1: Funeral. I kept shop.
Sep 3: Lizzie Surette here. Tom Pelrine got a sword fish.
Sep 4: Jean Connolly here p.m.
Sep 8: Russel and Covert Uloth here a.m. Italy surrendered.
Sep 9: Connie and her grandmother went to New Glasgow. [Connie
Grover's maternal grandmother was Johanna (Uloth Roberts) Grover married
to Nelt Grover. Connie's parents were Ina (Roberts) and Sidney Grover.-
Nelt Grover and Sidney Grover were first cousins. -pf]
Sep 10: Working on Angelo's letters. [Angelo was French. Was Marion
helping with writing some English letters?-pf] Waited at Agatha's
for mail. It was late. Letter from Nurse. Job in News office if I want
it.
Sep 11: working on letters. Ma and I out picking blueberries.
Sep 12: Saw Clarence Richarson Anne Mae and Eddie George Adeline. Boys
to ball game Canso.
Sep 13: Angelo brought blue berries. Looked nice in civilian pants and
beige shirt.
Sep 14: Working on letters.Mrs Bill Lawlor died either yesterday or today.
[Mrs. Bill Lawlor was Anastasia "Antie" (Fitzgerald) who
had first been married to Arklo Feltmate. She was daughter of John and
Elizabeth Ann (Uloth) Fitzgerald) -pf]
Sep 16: I went home with Agatha. She and her mother & I had soup
and fun. [Agatha's mother was Minnie (Uloth) Munroe, wife of Thurloe
Munroe-pf]
Sep 17: Angelo here to fix organ stool but no suitable screws. Brought
me a book. Came and drew letters over. Went to bed early.
Sep 18: Austen [Feltmate, son of Angus] & Sam & Carl Fitz
came home. Mr & Mrs Nathan Snow here tonight.
Sep 18: letter from Connie
Sep 19: To Ina's a.m. for milk. Ate big tomatoe. Lillian Conrad &
Vivian here p.m. Ina & Sidney [Grover] here tonight.
Sep 20: Connie & her gran. came home. Fred [Rhynold] had the
new [post] office to go in tonight.
Sep 21: Connie & I to Aunt Ethel's [Grover] tonight. Met Art's girl
Edith Pelham. Played Chinese checkers.
Sep 22: Mr & Mrs Nathan Snow went back home. Letter from Truro. Connie,
Norman, Angelo and I [walked] far as Harris' tonight. They came
in home til 11.45 approx. Argyle came and a man to room at Ina's. Carroll
[Feltmate] started fishing.
Sep 23: Connie here. We just sat in kitchen. I was tired of playing etc.
Sep 24: Connie called and took me to the show.
Sep 25: Some Bickerton men in shop.
Sep 29: Mr Rowe came and took Carroll to the Queensport dance.
Sep 30: Ainsley's birthday. [Ainsley Munroe, son of Minnie and Thurloe]
Oct 1: To Aunt Ethel's p.m. She and Maud, Connie and I to dance.
Oct 7: Innoculation at school for diptheria. Dance at Hall. Irving in
hospital last night.
Oct 9: Nice evening at Connie's. Bob, Norman and Blondie there. Also Mr
& Mrs Bill Marten. music and fun.
Oct 11: To Nelt's. Connie has gramaphone in store. Port Felix teachers
at office. Thelma & I at Mrs Tanner's tonight. Leslie's birthday and
Falcon and Alice is in Halifax with him. [Falcon and Alice Duncan were
Leslie's parents and Mrs Tanner was Alice Duncan's mother -pf]
Oct 13: Kept store. Pa in Guysboro.
Oct 14: Pa & Lydia to Canso with Jim. I kept store.
Oct 17: Fred's baby Clair [Rhynold] was buried. Had whooping cough
and pneumonia.
Oct 18: Connie, Agatha & I walked to ghost bridge with Isabel.
Oct 23: Connie and I to Agatha's. Art and Connie took me down to barracks.
Only Angelo there and Bob. Lloyd on guard.
Oct 30: Agatha & Connie here. A few dressed up for Hallow-e'en
Nov 3: No dance. Pouring with rain.
Nov 4: No dance. No fiddler. The Guild at Aunt Fan's [Grover].
Nov 5: Connie & I to show.
Nov 8: Home doing arithmetic. Ainsley Munroe came home.
Nov 9: Carroll & Mum had to get up last night as Colon Munroe was
very sick. Better today.
Nov 11: Rain tonight. The boys were to Mulgrave today. Air force dance
tonight. No one here. I did arithmetic.
Nov 12: Didn't go to show. Mama to Alice's. I knit.
Nov 13: Doug Fraser came home last night. Connie & I to dance. Tony
caught us at the hill. Had 3 dances. Angelo and 2 with Doug. Connie &
I came home alone. Navy truck passed by.
Nov 14: Calvin [Grover] came home 6 a.m. Jamie's baby christened
today [her brother Jamie Feltmate in Ontario and his wife Hazel
(Hawken) had a baby girl Patricia Joyce born in August-pf]
Nov 19: knitting and working on patchwork. Glen Johnson here to dinner.
No one here tonight. Beatty [Munroe] went away this a.m.
Nov 20: Aunt Ina and Connie and Agatha here. We sewed and danced.
Nov 23: Calvin [Grover] & [his mother] Aunt Ethel here p.m. Connie
& I up there tonight. Percy George there. Calvin is leaving in the
morning.
Nov 26: Johnson worked at Carroll's boat all p.m. til almost 10 tonight.
Connie & I started fancy work at her place and went to Aunt Ethel's.
Dec 3: Angelo called here and I went to Agatha's with him. Rae Armsworthy
and a Charlie George there. Harry Armsworthy called or Tony would have
been late for duty.
Dec 4: Aunt Ina quilting. Connie here too.
Dec 7: Snow and slush tonight. Didn't go to the [post] office.
Connie here til 9.30 or later. Mama and I had fun in the room dancing.
Dec 9: Last night Jimmie went up and said good bye to Connie. Norman &
Angelo were there with him. He went this morning. There is 2 new fellows
in Don & Jim's place.
Dec 10: P.O. Simpson arrived to board for a few days.
Dec 13: Simpson went away.
Dec 14: Falcon [Duncan] gave Angelo a sword [likely from a sword
fish -pf]
Dec 19: Angelo said good bye. Norman here too. Scotty went away too.
He was here with them. Connie and I singing hymns all evening. Bob called
in about 11.30 as he is going home on leave.
Dec 20: Connie & I waited at Ida's for mail. 2 new sailors at office
also Blondie Cook and Robby. We didn't go to dance.
Dec 22: The boys didn't feel well after being innoculated
Dec 23: Mama called Norman tonight to see how he is
Dec 24: Connie, Mum & I to church at 12. Bed at 3. oh oh
Dec 26: Flaked out!
Dec 27: Temperature must be lower but even now 101.6
Dec 28: Feel better today. Norman & Ken called to see me on their
way to Agatha's.
Dec 30: Norman & Ken here tonight. Brought me a box of candy. I'm
still in bed but feel O.K.if I stay here.
