Jan 3: Spent the afternoon at Aunt Ethel's [Grover]. Only their
own family at home. Late getting home from the mail and then busy packing.
Jan 4: alice Conrad & I went to Cross Roads with Fred H $1.25 each.
Monestery by bus and Josie Greencorn age 16 joined us on her way to Dartmouth
school. I went to Annie's [Duncan in Trenton] this time. Viola & I
went there on the jitney. In Monestery we talked to Blondie, Moon and
Leeman.
Jan 6: To the dentist 2 fillings and 1 extraction $5. Dr Adamson (Miss
macLean assistant) To bed early
Jan 7: To the dentist a.m. 1 silver filling and teeth cleaned $2. To John
Grover's for dinner and supper at Gertie's. She & I went to Beatty's.
Vic there too.
Jan 8: to Mrs Turnbulls sisters a.m. Annie & I visited Chattie [Charity
Uloth] Mr MacKinnon & Earl MacKinnon p.m. aunt Deen [Duncan]
arrived today.
Jan 10: Left N[ew] G[lasgow] about 11. Trainman sat with
me most of the way. Flattered at first but interest soon waning. Met Donny
[Feltmate] at Monestery and we rode to Cross Roads with the MacMillins
for $2 each and hired Harold Munroe for $1 each.
Jan 11: Pa is 71 today.
Jan 12: Went to Aunt Ethel's and had supper. Donny & Vera [Feltmate],
Mr & Mrs Conrad there tonight. Mosher and Leeman also.
Jan 14: Mom & Pa to the wedding from 11 a.m. (Elizabeth MacDonald
to Norman Henderson of England. ). I walked up with Ina & Connie [Grover]
and rode home with Mom, Pa, Earl & Clayton Hendsbee. At least
74 there.
Jan 16: Patsy here for supper. We went to barracks show. Sat side by side
in 2 big arm chairs and came home together with Carroll.
Jan 17: Assorting contents of trunks and what a room!
Jan 18: Home all evening writing mostly
Jan 19: Church a.m. Communion with Mr Hatfield. Young & tall from
Bayfield.
Jan 21: Lillian here stamping pillow cases.
Jan 22: Working pillow cases in shop. Fairchild in a short time. Snow
today. Prestanski & Cocherane at the office.
Jan 24: I didn't go to Show. Pa didn't either. Sel Myers hung himself.
Jan 25: This evening they put the new "apperatus" on the hill
and I think it effected the radio more than ever.
Jan 28: Took soup up to Mrs Nelt [Grover]. She is in bed.
Jan 29: Big wash. Went to show at barracks with Connie, Dickie, Carl &
Pa. Aunt Ethel sat with me. Dickie and Barteau had a fight. I danced with
Leeman, Mosher, Prestanski, and Christian. Came home in truck.
Jan 31: This was the lovliest month of fine weather!
Feb 2: Mama & Pa to see Jim Duncan. I listened to the program Joan
of Arc. (She was a french peasant girl who led an army and was burned
at the stake.)
Feb 3: Went to barracks dance with Connie & Dickie and came home with
them. Not very enjoyable. Danced with the tiffy also Prestanski &
Christian. Beatrice & Gloria came home [Duncan].
Feb 6: Reta here p.m. She went to Alden's and I went to Aunt Ethel's.
Mr Abbott & John Grover there. Also Everett George & Seymour Meeds.
I went to barracks with Connie, Tiffy, Leeman, Vivian, & Lang.
Feb 8: I went to the [post] office and nearly blew over. Icy roads.
Feb 10: Pa & Carroll to barracks show. Mama & I cut butterflies.
Feb 11: Explosion of boiler at barracks
Feb 13: Agatha & I went to Guild at Aunt Ethel's and played chinese
checkers. She won 4 out of 6. Disappointed in my Valentines.
Feb 14: Saw Earnie Gourlay. Jean & Austen [Feltmate] in today.
The men are working on the road. Got a nice Valentine. worked on pillow
cases tonight. Murry got a pot burner. [Likely Murray Munroe?-pf]
Feb 15: Carroll [her brother] got dressed up and went to Canso.
He looks super.
Feb 17: Blowing hard to the east. Arthur [Rhynold] here playing
crokinole.
Feb 18: Last night Ida's roof blew off. [Ida & Dan George?-pf].
Knitting. Barteau brought his pants up again to sew. Rhynold taxi
brought Carl home.
Feb 21: Hail. Little black barracks dog here (Chips)
Feb 22: Our first sleet this morning. But so warm it is slush tonight
Feb 23: Went to aunt Ethel's [Grover]. Have[lock] Munroe
there and Mr & Mrs Lohnes Feltmate too.
Feb 24: Mama's birthday. 4 of us home all evening. Earl's second baby
born today 8 a.m. I think a girl. Murry went away to Bickerton. [Edith
Earlene Duncan born to Earl and Louise Duncan -pf]
Feb 25: Mama went to Uncle George's [Grover] in the sleigh
and came home in the wagon.
Feb 27: Connie & I made a snow man by the church.
Feb 28: Went for a walk this afternoon to the lake. Connie & I to
the show "She Wouldn't say Yes" Rosalin Russel.
Mar 1: Went for a walk to the lake. 4 or 5 openings about 20 ft sq where
they hauled ice this week. Pa, Connie & I went to show at barracks.
"Cisco Kid" and the "Bowery Boys".
Mar 4: Falcon [Duncan] installed our oil burner. I kept store today.
Mar 5: Agatha here tonight. We lay on the bed and listened to the radio.

Mar 7: Mama hooking at Aunt Ina's. Went to show at Hall with Hancock,
Connie, Dickie. Deanna Durbin in "Because of Him"

I over there tonight. They are leaving for B.C. tomorrow
Mar 23: Home all day reading Readers Digest.
Mar 28: Went to barracks with Pa. Sat with Patsy. "Her Primitive
Man"
Mar 29: Didn't go to barracks. Bernie & Edward went with Carl &
Pa. Thelma came home last night.

April 3: Went to barracks with Pa & Carroll. Came home with Agatha
& Tiffy. Lovely show of Spencer Tracy in Africa

Apr 14: Mama put her quilt in. Aunt Ina helped her with the batt.

Apr 16: Went over and gave Mr Harv his 20 cents I owed him. Dickie was
drafted today
Apr 19: Orr took Joyce, Agatha & I to the barracks. Lillian, Butch
& Connie there. Fernie took a picture of us. Nice evening. Only a
few there. Met Vimy.
Apr 21: Connie & I to show. Amy Johnson flying
Apr 24: Agatha, Joyce & Orr called for me and we went to barracks
show (Jack Benny).
Apr 28: Connie, Agatha & I to show at the Hall "When Strangers
Marry"
Apr 30: Went to barracks with Vimy. Navy Picture.
May 1: Mom made fudge for the boys. Vimy & Smitty came for us to fo
to show but we didn't go.
May 3: Connie & I went to Patsy's dance. Erben & Donny & I
played. Russel & Connie & Agatha played too. I danced two with
Vimy Clowater. Lovely night.
May 5: Vimy & I dug clams this afternoon. I didn't go to the show.
It was a spooky picture. Vimy brought some records up.
May 7: Saw Vimy a few minutes this morning and he came up after they got
back from Three Top [Island]. Big party at barracks but I didn't
go. Antigonish girls and beer.
May 8: Rain this morning. Agatha Vimy Smitty also Barteau in the store
this afternoon. Smitty was asleep and Barteau was mean and put a lobster
on his ear.
May 12: Connie & I to show at Hall "Meet John Doe"
May 16: Vimy up this afternoon, copied music and argued a bit but we went
down to the show "Bedelia" and sort of patched it up
May 17: Connie, Joyce, Agatha & I went to Blanche's party (shower).
Fred brought us home after 12 in his new car
May 22: Vimy in the store from 3 to 5.20. Made cords & tassels of
yarn. He came up tonight but as usual it ended all wrong.
May 23: Vimy took Connie to the show. I went to bed but it isn't so bad.
May 24: At the show about Zombies. Came down with Agatha, Crookshanks
& Tiffy Phalen

Lexie, Bernie & I went to show at barracks but no good.
["Earnie" is Ernest Pyke and his mother. Marion eventually

Jun 4: Went to the show & dance at the barracks. What a racket
singing etc.
Jun 11: Party at barracks. A couple Queensport girls. Very good time.
Had a waltz with Vimy & Doug Fraser and Eurben
Jun 12: Went to Haulover p.m. To MacDonald's, Isabel's, Jean's [Feltmate]
and Bertha's [Pyche]. Came home with Dave Rhynold in boat.
Jun 15: Lillian's [Rhynold] baby born today at Antigonish. [James
David Rhynold, son of Lillian (Conrad) and Clarence Rhynold -pf]
Jun 16: Helped Mama paper some up the kitchen loft. Put up the hall
curtain. Mrs Tanner & Lizzie [Porter] here tonight. Thelma's
[Ehler] baby born today, her 2nd boy. [Roy Elliot Ehler born
to Thelma (Porter) and Roy Ehler -pf]
Jun 20: Went to Connie's shop tonight. Maurice Pitts playing guitar.
Eurben, Bernie, Arthur [Rhynold] & Leslie [Duncan] there.
Jun 22: Agatha [Munroe] & I went up the harbour in Bernie's
big boat alone! Then Bernie [Munroe] & Eurben took us to Yankee
Cove. I had supper at Agatha's. Bernie & Eurben came home with me
and I gave them some cake.
Jun 23: Bell went away drafted. They say its Bernie's birthday.
Jun 26: Went to Canso with Edna. My blood is down to 60. Went to Bible
class at the Hall. Mr Hart & Mr Kendrick
Jun 28: Melinda [(Feltmate) Munroe] & Alf [Munroe, her husband]
here today. Went to Yankee Cove with Aunt Ethel [Grover], Uncle
George [Grover], Foreman [McCabe] & Have[lock Munroe].
Took 2 calves over.
Jun 29: Mama & Pa went to barracks with McDonalds but the show machine
didn't work
July 6: Went to United church. 3 babies christened (Marguerite's, Clara's
and Purvis's. Also Clara's Arnold [Rhynold]). Ainsley took Agatha
& me in for ice cream to Purvis's.
Jul 10: Went to Fishermen's Union dance with Connie. Danced with Leslie,
Moon, & Dover guy. Had a nice time.
Jul 13: To the show at barracks tonight with Connie. The cook scared me
all through the picture "the Ghost & Mrs Muir"
Jul 16: Up to Connie's store tonight. Carl Fitz[gerald] & George
Fraser there.
Jul 17: Big New Glasgow truck in with supplies.
Jul 24: George Fraser here to dinner. We played for awhile. Tonight Uncle
Sidney [Grover], Jack [Farrell, a visiting relative from Boston]
& I sang.
Jul 28: Cecilia Cashin here.
Jul 29: Show at the Barracks. The Sullivans. I saw that first then Dance
at the Hall. Pat Munroe put it on.
Jul 30: We all went to the barracks dance but so many strangers, no fun.
Aug 2: We went to Huntley's tonight on the back of his truck. Bernie,
Eurben, Agatha, Patsy, Willie G, Mary, baby & I. Lovely night. Plenty
moonlight & warm.
Aug 3: Connie & I up the road all afternoon. Bernie & Erben came
down with us. I rowed them home. They took Patsy, Agatha, Shirley, Kathleen,
Beatrice & I to Yankee Cove and we almost run over Archer on the surf
board.
Aug 4: Murry's boat came in today.
Aug 6: I went to barracks dance with Orr, Joyce, Agatha, Patsy, Connie,
Pearl, & Gloria. Then Clara Rhynold and Helen came. There was Terry,
Pauline, Joesaphine, June, Annette, Shirley H, Shirley, Kathleen, &
Beatrice M. Also 3 Canso girls. Murry & Carroll played.
Aug 11: Carl, Murry, George F & Carl Fitz went swordfishing to C.B
[Cape Breton]
Aug 15: Goldie [(Williams) Hastings], Herm [Hastings her
husband], Donnie [Feltmate] and the tiffy here for haddock
supper. Mama & I went to Aunt Ethel's with the others tonight. Wilfred
Ehler
came for them and we all sang hymns. Mr MacCabe brought mom & me home.
Aug 16: Nice day. Did my work and picked some berries. Mama & I to
Purvis' for ice cream. Harry Duncan arrived (also Clayton & Sheila
Munroe and little sister).
Aug 17: Connie & I with Reynolds Harris to the Baptist church up the
River and to Guysboro to Greg Hadleys and to Boylston
Aug 21: Agatha, Pearl, Helen & I to the dance put on for River School.
Aug 22: Mrs Thurlow [Munroe] here looking at old pictures.
Aug 24: Ball game this afternoon in uncle Joe's field. 9-8 in favor of
H[alf] I[sland] Cove.
Aug 30: Hughie & Anne Duncan arrived
Aug 31: Ball game and just finished when the rain poured down.Whitehead
was far ahead this time. Earl Duncan's two children christened.
Sep 1: To Agatha's a short time. Vern [Agatha's brother] left about
8.30 by truck for Halifax. Agatha & her mother is going to Monestry
for Merle [another sister.]

Sep 13: Went to Uncle George's p.m. Took a blueberry pie & cake. Had
20 cent ice cream at Purvis. Went down and talked to Mrs Thurloe for awhile.
Sep 14: Lillian's baby christened. Pa, Mum & Uncle George stood for
it. Mum & Pa went to Bob Hendsbee's funeral with Dunc & Mrs McDonald.
Sep 15: Rain in torrents.
Sep 17: Eurben, Ainsley, Agatha, Pearl, Helen, Connie, Dickie & I
went to the barracks dance. I played all evening. We had a corn boil over
in the barracks.
Sep 19: Connie here and we ate fried potatoes
Sep 22: Connie & I to the show "Leopard Man of Africa"
Sep 23: Mama Ina Connie & I all went to the Red Cross meeting at the

Sep 24: Connie & I to the barracks show. Not much good. Jean [Feltmate]

Sep 25: I stayed home alone and worked some fancy work.
Sep 26: Capt & Mrs Myers here today. Mama & I picked blueberries
today. Pa nor I didn't go to the show. [not sure which Myers was Captain
Myers - pf]
Sep 29: Went to Nellie's, [Harry & Nelllie Feltmate], Katie's
[Munroe], McDonald's, supper at Joe's [Munroe]. Went
to Bertha's [dau of Horace/Hause Pyche], Harris, & Winslow's
[Munroe]. [Marion had spent the day at the "Haulover"
as Whitehead proper was called -pf]
Sep 30: Rain but Connie & Pa & I went to barracks show. Deanna
Durbin in "I'll Be Yours'
Oct 1: Dance at the Barracks
Oct 2: Went to Connie's [Grover] for birthday cake tonight
Oct 3: Went for a walk. Went up with Ainsley M[unroe]. Didn't go
to the show. Went to Uncle George's but the door was locked. Went to Conrad's.
Had ice cream at Sylvia's. A man fixed our radio so we don't get the motor.
Oct 6: Agatha Pa & I went to Monestery with John McDonald and started
on our trip
Oct 7: Arrived Montreal 7 p.m. approx. Nice trip. Marjorie & Leila
here. They & Venie & Bill met us [all Armsworthy relatives
from Belmont, Nova Scotia, children of Marion's aunt Hannah (Feltmate)
and William Armsworthy. "Venie" was Lavinia -pf]
Oct 8: Agatha [Munroe] left for Toronto. We went to both stations
and Eaton's. Angelo here tonight. [The Navy boy who had been billetted
with Marion's family in Whitehead -pf]
Oct 10: Venie & I to Angelos. Met Yolanda & mother. Left Montreal
for Porquis tonight. [Porquis Junction near Timmins in northern Ontario
was where Marion's brother Jamie and his family lived. -pf]
Oct 11: Sat up in my seat all last night but slept some. Got into
North Bay about 7:30 and should have changed trains but kept on and then
had to go to Capreol. Conductor got me a room at the hotel and I stayed
in all day. Bought my supper. Went to the station about 8 p.m. Lots of
young people there. Boarded the train about 10.30 as it was late. Met
a guy named Reuselle. Stayed at Ruth's room in North Bay. [Ruth Hawken
was Jamie's sister-in-law -pf]
Oct 12: Left Mrs McCane's house this morning. Went from N. Bay to
Cobalt. Saw Jamie there so got off and we drove with Arthur Hawken to
Mr Hawken's house. Met Arthur's wife [Rene], Emma [(Hawken)
MacLeod] & husband, and Ruth. Nice lake there. We left about 4
and got home to Porquis about 10.
[Marion stayed with her brother Jamie, his wife Hazel and young daughter
Patsy for the winter until the following May. By October 17th she was
already receiving the first of many regular letters from Agatha, Mama,
and Connie back home. Her time at Jamie's was full of drives and sight-seeing,
and many visits to and from a wide circle of new friends whom she thoroughly
enjoyed, and they appreciated her playing and singing and her fancy work.
She helped as best she could with house work, cooking and babysitting,
as Jamie and Hazel ran a Co-op store as well as Jamie's shift work at
Porquis Airport with the Department of Transport. Church and related activities
such as the Women's Auxiliary and bazaars and so on, took a lot of attention.
She started music lessons, travelling into Monteith to take them, and
would regularly go to a friend's home to practice on the piano there.
]
Dec 31: Good Bye to 1947 with its many ups and downs. Its joys and
its troubles. I think I've conquered them tho' and may 1948 be a better
year.
