 Jan 10: Carroll [Feltmate, her brother] left this morning for a 
        job in Hawkesbury. Rain & slush.
 
 Jan 14: Went to Ida's. Ate cabbage there. Cold day. Kay Hartley is visiting 
        Isabelle.
 
 Jan 16: I went to bed from 6:30 to 10:15 and got up to hear Uncle Walter's 
        program.
 
 Jan 17: Leslie [Duncan] came home this morning in the mail.
 
 Jan 19: Airplane went by quite close a.m.
 
 Jan 21: Plane circled this a.m. and went out.
 
 Jan 22: Mama and I to Ina's tonight quilting.
 
 Jan 26: A Mr. Cameron here this evening from Antigonish seeing if anyone 
        was going to take the course. Mama helped Ina [Grover] on quilt again.

 Feb 2: Slippery. It's Monday but they had the Guild because they didn't 
        have it Thursday or Friday.
 
 Feb 3: Carroll up river all day. Nova in about 4 or 5 p.m. Terrible icy 
        day
 
 Feb 4: Annual meeting at church. Pa there. Uncle Jim [Grover] & 
        Alice [Duncan] here before to audit books with Pa.
 
 Feb 5: Feel so restless all these evenings.
 
 Feb 13: Letter from Lindsay [Feltmate her brother] to Ma. Newsy 
        and swell.
 
 Feb 15: Church tonight. We went by fast time but service was by slow time. 
        Connie & Les & I came home together. He came down here till Gabriel 
        Heater was over [a radio program -pf]
 
 Feb 16: Finished Guild apron. Took it up to Johanna's [Grover]
 
 Feb 17: Nova in. O'Connel is on again. Stormy. Carroll had to come 
        home from woods at 3 or before. I took [milk] bottle up to Connie's. 
        Sam [Porter] here tonight. Mama put in mat [into a frame for 
        hooking -pf]
 
 Feb 18: Icy. Didn't feel very peppy a.m. but more talkitive noon.
 
 Feb 20: Brian Marr here at noon. Had meeting in story. Ate supper here. 
        Went with Earn Hensbee.
 
 Feb 22: Isabel & Clara MacDonald here p.m. Also Uncle George [Grover]
 
 Feb 23: sewing [pot] holders.
 
 Feb 24: Mama 59 today. Carroll in woods. Bernie & Ainsley [Thurloe 
        Munroe's boys] both home.
 
 Feb 25: Not very fine. Carroll up river.Uncle George here fixed lamp. 
        Put in generator. (I cleaned out screens)
 
 Feb 26: the roads had to be shoveled so the women could get to Nelt's 
        to Guild but just shoveled a path in places.
 
 Feb 27: Went out to see the snow this evening. Pa, Les, Falcon, Carroll 
        shoveled. Boxing tonight. Was Bobby "Ruffan" and Ali "Stole". 
        Allie won but Bobby stuck to it wildly.
 
 Feb 28: Went up to take bottle. Connie & Ina to Pervis'. I came home.
 
 Mar 2: Took bottle up at noon. Got patchwork from Johanna. School meeting. 
        Pa went up. Edward, Otto, Falcon here short time.Eclipse on moon. Dark! 
        Got answer to test and passport to become member.
 
 Mar 5: got Victory B[ond]
 
 Mar 9: Got up early so nice & fine. Went to Alice's [Duncan] 
        few minutes to see catalogs.
 
 Mar 10: Lovely day. Slept late. George F. here all afternoon singing.

 Mar 13: Snowy. Gave Ainsley Munroe eggs. Was surprised to see Harry 
        Duncan and Ainsley P[yche] come in about 6 o'clock or 7.
 
 Mar 14: Ainsley P, Connie [Grover] & I to Herman's [Rhynold 
        probably-pf]  Leslie [Duncan] came home when we came. 
        Ina [Grover] here. Otto & Herman sang.
 
 Mar 15: Harry & Ainsley left after dinner (about 11:30)
 
 Mar 17: Connie, Les & I went to Agatha's. [Munroe].  Only 
        Bernie, Agatha & [their] Ma home. Agatha had green shamrocks 
        on white icing on patties.
 
 Mar 18: Edward, Uncle George, Falcon here. Some making plugs. [for 
        lobster claws -pf] Government steamer maybe Laurier going in and out 
        3 times in a row. Mama quilting.
 
 Mar 23: Ina helped mum on quilt til about 8:30
 
 Mar 25: Connie & Ina [daughter and mother] here about 5 minutes 
        but Ina had to go home to practise. Aunt Fan [Grover], Mrs Thurlow 
        [Munroe], Connie & I to practise.
 
 Mar 27: Edward gave me and Mum a bar. He and Falcon here. He stayed to 
        hear fight. Joe Louis knocked out Ab Simon in 6th round.
 
 Mar 28: Rufus is to Uncle Dan's [George].
 
 Mar 31: In store. 2 soldiers in here from Canso. Henry Marr took Jamie's 
        boat home $45. Colin and Cecil Munroe got in a scrape last Friday by burning 
        old house accidintly.
 
 Apr 1: Clarence Rhynold home on leave last night.
 
 Apr 2: Some ice in harbor. Yankee Cove hemmed in. Nellie U[loth] 
        came to Aunt Ethel's [(Uloth) Grover] to stay for spring. Ethel 
        & George went to Cole Harbour, Marth is sick. [Nellie was the daughter 
        of Aunt Ethel's brother Rich Uloth in Cole Harbour. Marth was another 
        sibling of Ethel's and Rich's, and was married to Havelock Munroe. -pf]
 
 Apr 5: Alice [(Tanner) Duncan] and Mrs Tanner [Alice's mother] 
        here p.m. I took a snap of Alice on ice cake. She took one of me.
 
 Apr 6: A Dance tonight at Hall. Dance for fun. I walked up alone and came 
        home with Thelma. I played piano, Murry [Munroe] violin, George 
        [Grover] Guitar. Didn't dance. Home 12.15.
 
 Apr 7: Clarence Richardson here to dinner. Going away again tomorrow. 
        Got shoes fixed in Canso.
 
 Apr 10: Mama & I to Agatha's. Alden stays there until Maud gets home 
        from Halifax. Ainsley & I played. Agatha, Vivian danced. [Capt. 
        Alden D. "Harry" Munroe married to Maud B. Munroe-pf]
 
 Apr 12: Blowing. A squall or two of snow. Church tonight. John Williams 
        there & Mr Abbot's brother & Theodore Munroe.
 
 Apr 13: made chocolate cake
 
 Apr 14: I was to Pervis' before dark and called to tune Thelma's guitar.
 
 Apr 15: 3 fellows in store off ferry
 
 Apr 16: Aunt Fan papered kitchen and cleaned overhead. Papered till 10 
        p.m.
 
 Apr 17: Went up to Pervis' with an agent. Went to Hall. Danced with Reggie 
        & Ainsley. (corners Bernie & Harvey). Came home with Ida, Thelma 
        etc.
 
 Apr 18: Felt O.K. A little sleepy. Thelma here, Otto, Edward, Falcon. 
        Otto sang one song.
 
 Apr 21: Harbour full of ice. Crammed.
 
 Apr 25: I think I was to Fred's before dark, having taken a lb of butter 
        to Vivian who met me by Fred's.Telegram from Petawawa saying Arthur Rhynold 
        has scarlet fever.
 
 Apr 27: Plebosite. None of us voted. Whitehead went "No". But 
        general election went "yes", to relieve or not to relieve McKenzie 
        King of his promise, which was no conscription.
 
 May 1: Lizzie [(Duncan Rhynold) Porter] got telegram Arthur no 
        better. [Arthur was Lizzie's son by her first marriage-pf]. Alice 
        [Duncan] helped Mama paper dining room. Mrs F[eltmate] over. 
        Young Gerald helped Carroll to remove eggs from under shop. One little 
        chicken. [probably Gerald Rhynold -pf]
 
 May 2: Looked after chicken. Pa went to P.F.[Port Felix].  
        Gerald Munroe here to supper. Ma & I went in store with customers.
 
 May 3: Falcon & Edward here a.m. Ed stayed to hear Sable Island story.
 
 May 5: Took apron up to shop p.m. Was up to Nelt's for another apron tonight. 
        Arthur was no better according to minister's letter of May 1st.
 
 May 6: Agatha [Munroe] had mayflowers in her hair today. Saw a 
        plane tonight with lights. Pale in front red on side pale in back.
 
 May 9: 25 today. Uncle George [Grover] brought Mayflowers. One 
        of our chickens sick. 2 long straws got stuck in his throat. Connie & 
        Thelma had some birthday cake.
 
 May 10: Chicken died. Rainy. Horace [Pyche] here to supper. Carroll 
        took him home.
 
 May 11: Lobster boat Isabel H took union lobsters this morning. 96 crates 
        to Burnham & Morrell. Non -union lobsters were not shipped on her.
 
 May 12: Horace [Pyche] and Huntley [Hendsbee] here to dinner. 
        Uncle Bill Peart died a couple of days ago. [Bill was married to Marion's 
        Grandmother Grover's sister Charlotte (Jamieson)-pf]
 
 May 13: Wrote for medicine. 2nd bottle. Nice day. Went to Lizzie's. 
        Saw Arthur Ehler, Manzor & wife at Nelt's. Carroll's hand is sore. 
        Huntly [Hendsbee] pushed off his boat. Started to ix dress. Joe 
        G. here. Dave Rhynold went out with Carroll. [fishing]
 
 May 14: Carroll went out with Otto. Nice day. Fixed Mrs F's sweater. 
        Cleaned front room windows and painted. Aunt Fan here. She fixed my dress 
        sleeves. Letter from N I A school.
 
 May 15: Carroll outside with Edward. Kids collecting paper for war service. 
        I sorted magizines down in the store. Went to Connie's, saw her hat. Saw 
        in paper where freight train ran off track 1 mile from South River, 2 
        cars of lobsters, 15 cars in all.
 
 May 16: Peter Marr after "gas per o" [I guess she was spelling 
        "gaspereaux" the way it sounded - pf]
 
 May 18: Carroll brought chickens down from Clara's. Leslie got hit 
        in the eye with a piece of iron. Halseed was in today.
 
 May 19: Went to Ida's tonight. Alice Conrad stays with Vivian and Ida 
        this spring.
 
 May 20: Pa & Dunc to Canso to customs office to fix papers for lobster 
        shipping.
 
 May 21: tooth ache a.m. Slept p.m. Took the 2 chickens out and dug worms 
        for them. Lobster boat in today and stayed. 2 Newfoundland boys down to 
        shop. Connie & I sitting on verandah.
 
 May 22: Friday: Johnny Boudreau, Don Myet, Angus M here to store from 
        Dover. Guild at Minnie's.
 
 May 23: Carroll took Clara's 2 chickens home. Dear little things.  
        Edward got a call for examination for training.
 
 May 25: Harry, Ed Pyche and John Grover went. Joesaphine was down with 
        them, didn't see her. Bel Myrs was to Falcon's (from Philip's Harbor). 
        Carroll got 4 mackeral.
 
 May 26: planted a piece of cherry wood with a twig of little buds on it. 
        The men are getting their checks each night for lobsters.
 
 May 27: Victor Munroe was home for a few days. Went today.  Mama 
        washed, baked bread a.m. Margaret Smith called on phone for Mama & 
        Ina to make fire in Dave's house. They cleaned & dusted all p.m. in 
        there. Dave died at 3 p.m. the call this a.m. was about 9:15. I made cookies 
        p.m. [This was William David "Dave" Duncan, son of Angus 
        and Eliza (McDuff) Duncan, and married to Lydia (Creamer). They had lived 
        next door to Marion's family for many years. Dave was over in Philip's 
        Habour when he died. Margaret (Duncan) Smith was his sister -pf]
 
 May 28: Albert [Uloth] called New Glasgow to hear about Willie's 
        toes. 2 smashed but OK otherwise.
 
 May 29: Lydia, Deltha, Ida, Minnie Bob, Margaret Smith, arrived first. 
        Then the hearse and Ainsley and young undertaker Bobby Porter. Delth & 
        Ida, Margaret had dinner here. Ainsly is staying all night and Margaret 
        & Porter are staying at Falcon's. Was in a few minutes tonight.
 
 May 30; Was up to the service at the house. It was very short. A hymn 
        "Does Jesus Care?" and a short epistle "concerning those 
        who sleepeth" - 1 Thessalonians 4-13th, and prayer. Didn't go to 
        church service. Lydia, Minnie & Bob stayed at Lydie's tonight [that 
        is, they stayed in Dave and Lydie's house next door.-pf]
 
 May 31: Lydia, Minnie & Bob and Margaret Smith went back to New 
        Glasgow. Ida & Delth are in Philip's Harbour.
 
 Jun 2: Made spice patties a.m.
 
 Jun 4: Two fellows from N.G. bought Mackeral from Carroll $17 he got. 
        [New Glasgow]
 Jun 6: Connie & 
        I to Agatha's [Munroe}. Beatty [Agatha's brother] came home 
        form Halifax wearing his navy suit. Allison and Leslie [Duncan] there. 
        
 Jun 9: Lobster boat in. We shipped lobsters to Lindsay [Feltmate, Marion's 
        brother in Boston]
 
 Jun 11: Harry Armsworthy in store with Albert wearing sailor suit.
 
 Jun 12: Ma, Alice, Ethel, Gloria & Jim & Earn H[endsbee] to Canso 
        for perminents $5. Rae & bride Irene Lahey came with them from Earns.
 
 Jun 13: worked in store. Carl Fitz there. Dance at Hall. Tug boat in.
 
 Jun 14: they made over $51 at Dance.  Elsie Matthews who is married 
        to Shirly Booth are both on tug boat going to Sable Island.
 
 Jun 19: Sent my shoes to get dyed.
 
 Jun 20: Lobster supper at Harris's but I didn't go. Didn't how to get 
        back [home after. The Harris's lived and had a store in Whitehead proper, 
        quite a distance up the road from Lower Whitehead.-pf]
 
 Jun 23: This morning Monica Cashen married Nicholas David and Harvey 
        George married Jean O'Leary. There was a dance in P[ort] F[elix] 
        school and a dance in Queensport. It was a double wedding in Port Felix. 
        The Navy officer was down on the hill again today. A big plane was flying 
        low here. A Bickerton boat in. Saw 2 fellows in the shop tonight. [This 
        must have been when the Navy was scoping the site for a Naval Base, on 
        land which had belonged to Marion's Uncle Isaac Grover, and which later 
        would become a LORAN Station.-pf]
 
 Jun 24: The navy officer was up again. I mailed my watch to Eatons.
 
 Jun 25: Got my shoes from Abram Simon,  lined, lifts and dyed for 
        85 cents plus 10 cents tax.
 
 Jun 26: Lovely warm day. North wind warm. 4 men on the hill today. Saw 
        Everett [Feltmate] & Ainsley [Munroe] in shop. Going 
        away to join Navy. Saw Edna R[hynold]. Saw Billy Al [Feltmate] 
        at Johanna's today. Bert & Lola here tonight. [Lola (Feltmate) 
        married to Bert Munroe]
 
 Jun 27: Warm day. 2 cars down on hill. Isabel & Jenny here to 
        supper.
 
 Jun 28: Communion this a.m. Pat Feltmate and Angus Feltmate here on steps 
        evening.
 
 Jun 29: Pat Feltmate is buying Uncle Charlie's [Duncan] boat. Fred 
        & Dave is cutting trees on the hill down here today or tomorrow. We 
        had 9 chickens. Cats eat one when it got out. Captain Norman here tonight 
        also Sydney [Grover], Ina [Grover his wife], George [Grover], 
        Ethel [Grover his wife]. We had watermelon from Lindsay [her 
        brother in Boston-pf]
 
 Jun 30: Saw Stanley Cashin in store a.m. Antigonish car looking for 
        house for family. Mama to the [post] office tonight. Got our Ration 
        cards for sugar 1/2 lb person.
 
 Jul 1: One truck working down on hill. Lizzie Ceret & Vanita here 
        short time. She said plane fell in the marsh behind Port Felix. 3 men 
        jumped from plane and it landed elsewhere due to lack of fuel.
 
 Jul 2: Aunt Deen [Zenia Duncan], here to supper. There is a boarder 
        at Ida's.
 
 Jul 3: finished weeding parsnips this evening, me & mum. Dance up 
        the River.
 
 Jul 4: Saw contractor McDonald talking to Pa, Stanley, Placeed & Steve 
        Cashen. Gill McEachren here to store. Saw Willie U[loth] at Nelt's. 
        Ethel here before going to Alice's.
 
 Jul 5: Down on hill with Connie & Agatha. Home rest of day.
 
 Jul 6: Bernie [Munroe] went to New Glasgow for examination. McDonald [in] 
        telephoning.
 
 Jul 7: Dorothy Boudreau married Fordie Pitts. Rain! C.R. McDonald here 
        3 times telephoning. They blasted today and put up a shed & telephone 
        poles. 2 trucks on. Strawberries to sell and quite a rush. Thelma [Porter] 
        here tonight. Carroll [her brother] to wedding.
 
 Jul 8: Early this morning Carroll's bed got afire. But he got it out. 
        Mailed parcels to Essie [Farrell] & Arthur R[hynold]. 
        last night. Reggie got me pop. Willie U. to sop. Lots of freight. Weeded 
        carrots. Saw Maizie Munroe & Hazel & little Thelma in shop.
 
 Jul 9: Over to shop this evening putting in new bars [chocolate I imagine 
        -pf]. Dance at Hall for fun.
 
 Jul 10: Saw Wilfred Conway & wife. 2 big trucks from Monestry 
        down. George F. here playing fiddle.
 
 Jul 11: About 2.30 Isabel, Jenny, Marie Conway here.
 
 Jul 12: Pa to Dunc's [Duncan MacDonald] p.m. Church tonight. Ada is home. 
        Mrs Dunc was away to Saint Anne's Quebec last week.
 
 Jul 13: Fougere fellow driving truck today. Laurence Pelrine came for 
        some of the Frenchmen after work.
 
 Jul 14: Another new truck on making 4. Aunt Ethel [Grover] has a boarder. 
        Electric storm this evening.  Sylvia [Williams] was married today 
        very likely.
 
 Jul 15: The lightening & thunder was fierce at 2 a.m. The trucks weren't 
        on p.m. because of spoiling the wet roads. Jamie [her brother who was 
        working in Ontario] came this evening.
 
 Jul 17: Dance at Hall for school. Jamie & there. We played some. Murry 
        & George played. Had one dance with Jamie. No fun tonight.
 
 Jul 18: Got my watch [from Eatons, repaired -pf]
 
 Jul 19: 4 Big poles brought here on a little trailer. Mama to choir 
        practise.
 
 Jul 20: "Freddy" Abell came to Connie's.
 
 Jul 22: Jamie, Isabel, Merdith & I to Canso. Earan Hensbee $5. Went 
        to Nic's & A.N.'s, Carn's [Feltmate] barber shop, Pembroke's 
        & clinic at school. Connie, "Freddy", Agatha here this evening.
 
 Jul 23: Earl & Inez married at 10 a.m. [George Earl Duncan, son 
        of James Henderson and Laurel Edna (Grover) Duncan (known as Jim & 
        Edna), marrying Inez Snow, dau of Spurgeon Osborne and  Carrie Ellen 
        (Munroe) Snow -pf].  Jamie [Feltmate] and Gloria [Duncan, 
        sister to the groom] stood. I went to Snow's for tea with Jim, Falcon 
        & Alice [all Duncan's] . Was also to the dance at Hall. Jud 
        there with Edith. Talking to Walter Ehler too. Ma, Pa & me came home. 
        Raining.
 
 Jul 25: Went to Ida's. Agatha was there, also Celie [Uloth], Lillian 
        Cook & family.
 
 Jul 27: Meeting at Hall for Home Defense.
 
 Jul 28: Hughie, Helen & baby arrived at Falcon's. Helen Lynk came 
        to Ethel's. Dance at Hall. Had one with Doug Fraser in his sailor suit.
 
 Jul 29: Helen D here but had to leave as the baby was crying for here.
 
 Jul 30: Helen Lynk & Ethel also Joe Munroe here tonight.
 
 Jul 31: Jamie left 6 a.m. with Earn.

 Aug 4: Lydia & Ainsley arrived. A fellow taking snaps for Co-operation.
 
 Aug 5: Aunt Deen [Zenia Duncan], Chester [Duncan, Deen's son] 
        & Wilfred Morrell up today. Chester fixing a paling around the grave 
        [of his father Charlie].
 
 Aug 8: Douglas went away today I think. Ad Fitz[gerald] and the 
        gang arrived. There is a big pole put up on the hill today.
 
 Aug 9: Tom Pelly here tonight.
 
 Aug 10: Connie [Grover] here but a quick dance was arranged so 
        she went. Ainsley & Willie U are leaving in the morning. Beatrice 
        & Virginia came tonight.
 
 Aug 11: Pa, Lydie & Ina went to Guysboro today. I kept store.
 
 Aug 12: To Nelt's for lavendar for Mrs. F[eltmate]. Saw Percy Cashen 
        over on truck but not to speak to. Dance at Hall.
 
 Aug 13: Manzer Hensbee taking orders for men's suits. Pa ordered one almost 
        $40. George Digdon here with him. Said he was 63 or 53.
 
 Aug 14: Picked currents. Went to Aunt Ethel's with her boarders. Aunt 
        Ethel's [Grover] boarders are Charles Bunvie, Bill Pero, Benny Myatt, 
        Johnny Carr. Stayed a short time and they came down for a hair cut to 
        Falcon's. We met Ma and brought her back. John Dillon & Geoff Peart 
        here today.
 
 Aug 15: Leander & Ella McDuff also Millie & Joan visiting Whitehead. 
        Johnny Jones & Lydia visiting. She has 2 girls.
 
 Aug 16: Jess McKenzie to dinner. Hause [Horace] Pyche and Carl Munroe 
        on steps. Charlie Carter here tonight because he couldn't get into Ida's 
        until 10 when we saw a light there.
 
 Aug 18: Mr Bonvie & Aunt Ethel down to the store. and they say Johnnie 
        Carr is soon getting married.
 
 Aug 19: Johnny and the boarders went to dinner on the truck. I picked 
        berries this evening and was all upset because they acted so queer. Not 
        the berries. Millie, Edna R, Thelma here today. Dance tonight. Went up 
        with Bonvie, Perrio & Pa. Danced with Johnny Carr & Leslie, corners: 
        Laurence & Lockie Kuzar.
 
 Aug 20: Guild here. Mr & Mrs Abbott & Miss Rob here. She was an 
        elderly lady talking on W. A. [Women's Auxiliary]. Little Archie 
        went asleep on the bed. Kenny stayed asleep in the car. Agatha here. No 
        other girls.
 
 Aug 21: Big fire somewhere. Smoke galore. Joe Grover here tonight.
 
 Aug 22: Lillian Conrad here short time. Bishop H. confirmed Thelma, Vivian, 
        Adeline & Inex tonight.
 
 Aug 23: Beatty & Vern [Munroes} came either last night or this 
        morning.
 
 Aug 25: Neta Fraser is home. Isabel here from 4 p.m. We went down on hill. 
        Saw all the wires and the steel house with 2 compartments, etc. We walked 
        up to Hall and I danced with Jack Shrider and walked home.
 
 Aug 27: While I slept Mr & Mrs Mel and Mrs Angus Munroe here. Fanny 
        Al [Fanny (Feltmate) married to Al Munroe] to supper. I went up 
        to Ethel's in front seat with Bonvoit. Mama came up later. Ellsworthy 
        Bonvoit came late for supper. They all went to the dance except Steven 
        Fougere. I went up with Mr Charlie Bonvoit.
 
 Aug 28: 2 fellows in store from a Yarmouth sword fishing boat. Talking 
        to Ellsworth Bonvoit about the salvage. Mama picked blue berries. Isabel 
        & Ella here to pay for strings and to Connie's to buy books for school.
 
 Aug 30: 4 of the boarders came Fougere, Bonvoit, Perrault and Myet.
 
 Aug 31: Fine day. Went to Isabel's with Elias Lewis. Was to Katie's too. 
        Had picture taken with Beatty. Had supper came home with Mr McGraw, Isabel 
        and Virginia. Arthur R[hynold] came home tonight. Also Adrian Uloth.
 
 Sep 1: Margaret F, Aunt Ethel, Annie D[uncan] Mama & I out

 Sep 2: Beatty [Munroe], Everett [Feltmate] & I to Canso. 
        Out on Whitman's wharf and in to George Zada's, had pineapple ice cream. 
        Beatty's car. Annie and her children is staying here tonight.
 
 Sep 3: Went to the dance with Ethel & George. Danced with Edward and 
        Walter Buchy, corners Fred Ryters and Bill Fraser.
 
 Sep 6: Harry Duncan & John Grover here. they and Mama & I went 
        to the cemetery. Was talking to Edna David in a car.
 
 Sep 7: Pa, Ma, Connie & I to Port Felix picnic in the afternoon. Played 
        organ in school house. Had supper in Hall. Went to Mrs Cashen's lay down 
        for an hour. Crowded floor tonight. Danced with Stanley. Came home before 
        12.
 
 Sep 8: Went to bed quite early.
 
 Sep 13: Rheumatism today. That's quite new. Heard Beatrice fell and hurt 
        her head. Heard there was a strange car down on hill Sat evening I think.
 
 Sep 15: Leslie [Duncan] got his call.
 
 Sep 17: Pa to Canso with Shim. He was turned down from the army. Is home 
        for a few days. Guild at Ida's. Air force truck out here tonight.
 
 Sep 18: Dance at Hall. Danced with Pa & Lawrence. Fight.
 
 Sep 19: Busy today. Earn Hensbee brought us to Queensport this evening.
 
 Sep 20: Mum to see Uncle Alex [Jamieson]. We had dinner. Marie 
        [Williams, Marion's cousin] & I went down to see Home Drilling.
 
 Sep 21: Came to Trenton with Wilfred Ehler. Al Jamison came far 
        as Guysboro (sore eye). Joe Grant & Joe Sullivan came to Trenton. 
        Rain!
 
 Sep 22: Mama to New Glasgow Show. A black out. I never noticed it. Only 
        the whistle.
 
 Sep 23: More rain but Annie, Mum & I went to Mrs Turnbull's and Marguerite's 
        & Minnie George's.
 Stayed home tonight. Harry & Annie [Duncan where Marion and her 
        mother are staying] to the wedding at Lillian Dort's.
 
 Sep 24: Mama & I to Clissie's [(Uloth) Ward], Margaret Munroe's, 
        Mrs Lumson's, Guy McDonald's, Arthur Feltmate's where we saw Mel [Feltmate, 
        brother of Arthur] and [Mel's] son Alden. Had dinner there. 
        Went to Bill Snow's and went to Viola's. Mama to Horton's. No one home. 
        Arnold & I to H. Aikens all evening. Mama & Vi came up too. Stayed 
        with Vi all night.
 
 Sep 27: Mama & I to Charlie F[eltmate]. He wasn't home. Has 
        5 boys, Gorden, Donald, Russel, Vernon, Kenneth, maybe not in that order. 
        [Charlie also had a son Nelson born a few years after this diary entry 
        -pf] Dinner at Tom's [Feltmate]. Rhoda [Tom's wife] went 
        to John's with us. [Tom and Rhoda were Charlie's parents -pf]
 
 Sep 28: Bought things. Rainy. Made appt with dentist. Saw Dr Daye 
        first. Blood test not up to 80 yet. Bought shoes. Les Fanning here we 
        sang & played then Buddy & Billy came. We sang some more.
 
 Sep 29: Donalda [Bigney] & I went shopping. She got a blue 
        tam and skirt. I bought ice cream. We went to dentist. I took gas. $7   
        5 teeth.
 Sep 30: Saw Wilfred. 
        He said the little girl has infantile paralysis. Hope they're wrong. He 
        is building a house.
 Oct 1: Mama & I went to dentist p.m. but he was out. Lexie [(Duncan) 
        Bigney] called for us. We went to Garret's then back to dentist. Mama 
        waited for me. I was crying when I found my teeth were gone. I could feel 
        him working on them before I really woke. $7 for 6.
 
 Oct 2: Went  down to dentist alone. Went back to Lexie's. She came 
        to train with us. 1.75 from N.G. to Monestry. 1.05 to Guysboro in Chev. 
        70 cents to W[hite] H[ead] road on bus. 75 cents to Earn. 
        Steven David came home too in uniform on lief.
 
 Oct 3: Connie [Grover], Leslie [Duncan], Arthur [Rhynold] 
        here tonight. I didn't talk much. Its hard to say S.  There are 
        about 8 sailors stationed here.[in Whitehead-pf]
 
 Oct 4: Church a.m. Christening of Margaret & Ross' [Feltmate] 
        baby Leta Cora Odessa. Pretty baby, light curly hair. Good as gold. 
        Mrs McLean to church. Also 2 sailors. Mum and I to Alice's p.m. Mrs McLean's 
        children rather pretty. Mum & Pa went to Haulover with McGraw.
 
 Oct 7: Joe G[rover] & Bill Phalen here tonight.
 
 Oct 9: John Dillon and Geoff Peart here to dinner. Then a sailor Angelo 
        Di-Tomasso came as our boarder. For dinner. [Marion and her family 
        stayed in touch with Angelo for many years after, and indeed my father 
        (Marion's brother) took us to visit Angelo 20 years later (c 1962) near 
        Montreal where Angelo then lived with his wife and children -pf]
 
 Oct 11: Harry & Arnold came to dinner & supper. Radio all 
        evening.
 
 Oct 13: Nurse McDonald here to dinner and supper. Stayed all night. We 
        drove around. Mild cases of scarlet fever - Pearl, Angus R & Earnie.
 
 Oct 14: Went to Ida's with nurse p.m. Angelo went to Sidney's tonight.

 Oct 15: Carroll went with Murry and Arthur fishing. Mama went to Guild 
        to Ethel's. Pa & Angelo & I home, we wrote, played & ate.
 
 Oct 16: Connie here. Angelo, Connie & I went up to her house. They 
        played cards. We played organ. Came home about 10. [Connie was Sidney 
        & Ina's daughter]
 
 Oct 17: Mama & I to the church decorating for harvest tonight. 
        Angelo very late (10 p.m.) getting home from hill. [The "hill" 
        was the south end of Deming Island/Lower Whitehead, where a naval base 
        had been installed, later became a LORAN station -pf]
 
 Oct 18: Angelo to Mass [in Port Felix]. Lelia, Chester & 
        Ellizabeth Anne [the Duncan family] here p.m. Church tonight. Harvest. 
        Marie [Williams], Mrs Abbott, Evelyn George over. Blowing and a 
        big fire across the harbour somewhere. [Marie Williams later married 
        Robert "Bob" Spidell and returned to Queensport where she had 
        grown up -pf]
 
 Oct 19: Last night it blew and rained. Albert [Uloth] came 
        for men to haul boat. Angelo fixed the clock. we mailed boots, lines, 
        twine, plans for sails, shells, to Jamie [Marion's brother in Ontario]. 
        John Dort here short call.
 
 Oct 21: Mama to Mrs Norm's funeral. Mr Abbott and Mr Thorpe officiating, 
        from the Anglican church to Methodist grave yard. Lee, Isabel, Earn, Gertie, 
        Joesaphine, Harold, Owen, all there. I didn't go. [Maud Abigail (George) 
        Munroe, daughter of John George and Margaret Armsworthy,  married 
        to Norman Alexander Munroe, and had children Owen, Gertrude, Isabel (married 
        to Lee Munroe), Josephine and Harold. The diary entry mentions "Earn" 
        : was there a son Ernest that I have missed? -pf]
 
 Oct 22: Pa to Antigonish with Dunc [MacDonald]. Got home before 
        supper. 2 more boarders, Frank Lewis and Parzan, here to supper. Angelo 
        got home about 10:30, they came about 10. I was up to Connie's for mail. 
        She came down with me.
 
 Oct 23: Adrian here to dinner. I went to Ida's with her. Saw Neil McNevin 
        & Lloyd Wakeland. Earn & Gertie & Weldon here to supper. Angelo 
        came home about 8 p.m. and often being terribly quiet. Pa & he & 
        I played 45. He went on duty at 12.
 
 Oct 24: Huntley [Hendsbee] here to dinner. Frank Lewis didn't get here 
        til about 2.15. Huntley found his boat and they pulled her out of the 
        water. Angelo is on duty from 6 to 12 p.m. Lewis is there too. Peerzan 
        home all evening. Bought my cushion.
 
 Oct 25: Rainy. Angelo didn't go to church. Cook got up just in time for 
        dinner. Frank and Angelo down on hill p.m. and evening. Cook home. I had 
        a nap p.n. also rest evening. Falcon {Duncan] here tonite. Grand 
        evening talked hunting etc. Frank to bed tho Cook played banjo everything 
        when he went to bed. [I assume Cook is the same as Peerzan, since they 
        have three boarders, Angelo diTomasso, Frank Lewis and Cook Peerzan -pf]
 
 Oct 26: Bernice Snow to store
 
 Oct 27: The boys didn't stay here last night. The cots were put up in 
        the barracks. Angelo came up for his things, stayed awhile. Frank & 
        Cook came for theirs.
 
 Oct 28: No boarders today only Frank came a.m. paid his board. Cook here 
        p.m.. Joe Grover here tonight.
 
 Oct 29 : Agatha [Munroe] came home from Halifax.
 
 Oct 31: Mama & Ethel quilting at Alice's.
 
 Nov 1: Communion a.m. Rain. One of the visitors P.O. from Barracks there.
 
 Nov 2: Mama & Mrs Thurloe quilting at Alice's.
 
 Nov 3: Scotty and Robby were here telephoning, for one of the boys has 
        so much pain in his side.
 
 Nov 4: Last night we were up until about 3. Dear me!!  Dr. brought 
        Lloyd Wakeland back, he's feeling better. Angelo came up. Cook, Norman, 
        Harvey and Scotty also here. Connie and Angelo & I went up together 
        to the dance. Norman and Pa just ahead. Connie, Les & I came home 
        12. 1 dance with Bert. 1 with Angelo.
 
 Nov 6: Ma & I went to the dance. Pa was there too. Carroll played. 
        Pa, Ma, Arthur & I came home at 2. I danced Scotty, Reggie, Cook & 
        Pa.
 
 Nov 8: got up 12 noon. Frank & Scotty here to get our row boat. Cook 
        & Norman here p.m. Connie & Leslie & I to Agatha's tonight. 
        They say Pero & wife visited Aunt Ethel.
 
 Nov 9: Helen P[orter] here a.m. to hear cowboys. Not on though. 
        The evening was rather long. Robby here to telephone.
 
 Nov 11: Rain but fine for the dance. Connie & I went. Arthur & 
        Leslie went up with us. Terrible noisy. Pretty near fight. Dances galore.
 
 Nov 12: Albert & Leona cleaning U[ncle] Charlie's house.
 
 Nov 13: Had it cosy tonight in front room. Pa, Ma & I played. Elias 
        Lewis brought coal.
 
 Nov 15: Lillian Phalen came home. Beryl is home too. The cook got back 
        from Canso at supper time.
 
 Nov 16 : Reggie & Robert went away today. Henry Uloth was to Ethel's 
        yesterday. [Henry Uloth was Ethel Grover's father]
 
 Nov 18: About 70 to the Hall. Queensport girls and air force.
 
 Nov 20: Angelo, Frank etc all gunning today.
 
 Nov 24: Albert Munroe moved over today [probably from Yankee Cove to 
        Whitehead-pf]. Jim Grover here, killed Ida's pig. Carroll got about 
        3000 fish.
 
 Nov 27: Went to Aunt Ethel's on the cart & horse. Had supper. Went 
        to show. Came home with Ma Pa.
 
 Nov 29: Church tonite. Came down with Edna & Wilfred. He looks good 
        in uniform. [Wilfred Rhynold, son of Dave & Lizzie (Duncan) Rhynold, 
        and his wife Edna (Munroe) -pf]
 
 Nov 30: Boston had a terrible fire in a night club. About 400 people 
        lost? Spurge Snow and Elias Lewis here. Spurge to supper. Art Baldwin 
        here and had lunch tonight.
 
 Dec 2: What a storm of wind and rain but finer tonight. Jimmie Sprole 
        brought the mail. John Phalen lost his boat. The sailors got back from 
        holidays.
 
 Dec 3: Mama got Ina to twist yarn. Carroll & Robby came in from Barricks 
        to say steamer ashore. Carroll stood by in Murry's boat all night.
 
 Dec 4: Liz Haines and Bert's wife here p.m. Liz and Leona here tonight 
        until after eleven. No show tonight as Noft is sick.
 
 Dec 5: I see Angelo, Norman, Jimmy and Neil got back from holidays.
 
 Dec 6: Emmet Joyce in a few minutes also Uncle George [Grover] tonite. 
        Carroll down to the barracks and Angelo gave him Xmas seals.
 
 Dec 8: Busy doing apron etc. a couple days ago Billy King went on big 
        island to work with Jim. Today Dan George took over Three Top [Island 
        Light]. Huntley [Hendsbee] resigned. going to bed before 10 
        which is new.
 
 Dec 9: Some of the boys to Cole Harbor having dental work done. Scotty 
        had trench mouth. Cook is sick.
 
 Dec 10: Norman came about 9 p.m., Uncle George here. Norman forgot to 
        go, so we didn't go to bed til after 12. Angelo [to] C.B. taking 
        pictures.
 
 Dec 11: Mrs Tanner brought buttermilk down. Yesterday Huntley swum his 
        cow up through the cold water and walked her to the River.
 
 Dec 12: Snow on the ground.
 
 Dec 13: Carroll was fishing and late getting in.
 
 Dec 14: Blustery. Got our Eaton parcel p.m. No mail tonite. Lloyd W. went 
        home on lief. I worked on apron. Mum hooked [mat].
 
 Dec 15: Worked on apron at Nelt's all p.m.
 
 Dec 18: Show but didn't go. Tired and it's cold.
 
 Dec 21: Calvin [Grover] and [his mother] Aunt Ethel went 
        to Halifax. He got his call.
 
 Dec 22: women trimming church tonight.
 
 Dec 23: School concert. Didn't go. Icy.
 
 Dec 24: Trimmed tree and front room. Scottie and I danced half the afternoon 
        in between times. Connie & Thelma delivered gifts. We went to church 
        11 p.m.
 
 Dec 25: Opened parcels went to Connie's with her. Angelo & Norman 
        to dinner. Norman left at 2. Angelo at 4. He taught me how to dance to 
        swing music.
 
 Dec 26: Norman W brought our mail and came back stayed the evening. Agatha 
        here too.
 
 Dec 28: Norman & Scotty called for me. Gloria here so Scotty went 
        up with her and Norman & I called for Connie. Bernie & Agatha, 
        Norman, Scotty, Connie & I all there for quite awhile. good fun. Icy 
        coming home but good fun.
 
 Dec 29: Aunt Ethel & George here tonight. Norman brought the mail. 
        He is going to the river dance.
 
 Dec 30: Owen here to dinner. Mama & I to Albert Munroe's p.m.
